Discussion 11: Investigations – Methods and Practices
Detectives has three goals in their investigative work; to control criminals based on knowledge, pursing justice and addressing problems that come from public concern. Detectives can be involved in case-oriented investigations driven by police reports of a crime and attempts to get a solution for the case. In most police department, case-oriented investigations are the recommend and utilized. Another method of investigation is the offender-oriented investigations. Offender-oriented investigations, are adopted to focus the detectives on specific offenders that commit majority of crimes. Offender-oriented investigations in police departments are adopted alongside case-oriented investigations which are essential in providing information that contribute to potential solvability of many reported crimes at once.
Significant styles of criminal investigation include reinforcing patrol, standard reactive, focusing in major cases, conducting regulatory inspections, passive notation for future connections as well as discovery enforcement. The methods of investigative organization in police departments include, functions of the investigations covering different stages, solvability and seriousness of investigation, the crime type and the special investigation units in special circumstances. Following RAND study, technology has influenced the ability for people to solve crimes. Technology integrated in investigation serves to corroborate the testimony of witnesses and victims. Investigative practices has been enhanced by surveillance provided by technologies such as drones, video cameras and night vision goggles. Efficient integration of technology in investigation processes allows the better handling of data and evidence as well as the collection, analysis and identification of perpetrators of crimes. Technology helps in solving cases, but still creates difficulties for detectives especially in the high-profile cases by present the detectives with multiple issues in the process of the criminal investigation.
