I’ve started 3 threads with potential subjects/topics to discuss but please feel free to add additional threads too! The requirements for the discussion board:

1. You must POST at least once by Wednesday, February 17th. The post must be at least 150 words and should specifically reference and reflect on material from Weeks 5 or 6.

2. You must RESPOND to at least one classmate by Thursday, February 18th. The response must be at least 150 words and should extend the discussion, raise new questions or pose different viewpoints.

The suggested topics:

Affirmative Action Attitudes: A 2018 Gallup poll found that the majority of respondents support affirmative action programs, with support increasing over the past few years (https://news.gallup.com/poll/247046/americans-support-affirmative-action-programs-rises.aspx

). What is your perspective on affirmative action? Do you reflect the attitudes expressed in the poll? As a comparison, ask one friend or family member whether they generally favor or oppose affirmative action programs and why.

Discussion vs. Silence: Many classrooms include participation in large group discussions as part of the student’s grade. Is discussion something that you value and feel comfortable with? Should discussion be an important part of a student’s participation grade or is that privileging a particular cultural value?

How do stereotypes influence learning?: Earlier in the course we discussed “stereotype threat” and this week we considered the “model minority myth.” Have there been stereotypes/myths that have influenced how you think about yourself and others in terms of what could/should be expected with respect to schooling and achievement? What should be done to address these?
