Discussion: Group with highest percentage of diabetes
This is the second of three parts of the CDC assignment. There is a separate upload link for this part of the assignment. Each part must be uploaded in its own assignment link. For this part of the assignment, you will need to revisit the CDC website https://www.cdc.gov/brfss/brfssprevalence/ . Follow these steps using the CDC link to complete the assignment:
1. From ”Explore BRFSS Data by Location” click on the drop down box, select Maryland. Under ”Class” select ”Chronic Health Indicators”. The Topic for the first set of data will be ”Diabetes.” Then select the most recent year for which data are available.
2. There is only one question. To get demographic data (do not include pregnancy-related diabetes), click the drop down box next to ”View By”, observe the ”Yes” responses for each of the demographic groups listed and answer the following questions. In each category: (a.) Which group had the highest percentage of diabetes? (b.) Which group had the lowest? (c.) If you had to cross-list all of the categories (age, gender, race, education, income), who would the person with the highest risk be; who would the person with the lowest risk be? Please note that this question does not say include data for every single category in each group, only the highest and lowest in each group. Your answer should be one composite picture of an individual (including all categories) for highest and one for lowest. Your ”picture” should be a written description, not an actual picture.
3. Go back to your Location page (Maryland) again and select ”Overweight/Obesity” for your Class, and ”BMI Categories” for your Topic. Select the most recent year. Answer the same questions (a-c) as you did in step #2 only this time for Obesity.
4. Now click on the ”Chronic Health Indicators https://www.cdc.gov/cdi// (Links to an external site.)” link and under ”View One Indicator for All Locations” select ”Diabetes” for your Category and ”Prevalence of Diagnosed Diabetes among adults…” as your Indicator. For this indicator, how does your Maryland compare to Virginia? For this indicator, how does your Maryland compare to the United States as a whole? Repeat the process and select ”Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Weight Status” as your Category. Select ”Obesity among adults…” as your Indicator. Now, click on “Chronic Health Indicators” (https://www.cdc.gov/cdi/) and choose “Diabetes” as your Category and “Prevalence of Diagnosed Diabetes among Adults…” as your Indicator under “View One Indicator for All Locations.” How does your state of Maryland compare to Virginia in this area? How does your Maryland compare to the rest of the United States for this measure? Repeat the process and choose “Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Weight Status” as your Category. Choose “Obesity among adults…” as your Indicator.
Again, for this indicator, how does your Maryland compare to Virginia and to the United States as a whole?
