Assignment overview
This assignment requires you to argue a rationale for Arts education. There are two parts to
this essay.
Firstly, you are asked to reflect on the value of creativity and the Arts within education using
academic research to support your argument. Secondly, you are asked to articulate your
understanding of one of the three indicated Arts’ learning areas/subjects with reference to the
curriculum.
You will have the opportunity to reflect on your growing understanding of the Arts and
education throughout the unit, and relate these ideas more personally within the reflective
component of your folio in Assignment 2: Folio

Assignment details
You are to write a 1600-word essay that consists of two parts:
Part A: You are to write an 800-word essay in response to the following question: What is the
value of creative arts in primary education?
In Part A, you must:
explain how the Arts provide a different way of experiencing and understanding the world
that is unique from other learning areas
describe the benefits of creative learning experiences and how the knowledge and
understandings learned in these experiences are important transferable skills.
Part B: You are to write an 800-word essay that addresses the following prompt: Investigate
the teaching and learning of one of the Arts learning areas/subjects—either Visual Arts,
Music or Drama.
In Part B, you must:
describe a specific pedagogical approach to the teaching and learning of one specific Arts
learning area/subject (Visual Arts, Music or Drama) that you have chosen
explain how elements of ICT, using the Digital Technologies content descriptions or ICT
General Capabilities, can be incorporated into the Arts learning area/subject you have
chosen.
explain where this one specific Arts learning area/subject is situated and structured in the
curriculum for primary education, and explain how it could be integrated across the
curriculum
explain the elements of the one specific Arts learning area/subject that are required to be
understood in order to effectively teach it in primary education.
You must draw upon the core texts, relevant curriculum, course materials, and other
contemporary literature to support your arguments. You must use the appropriate academic
referencing for this unit—APA 7 Edition.
