• Compare and contrast the literary works of Booker T. Washington and W. E.
B. DuBois, and focus on major themes revealed in their literary work Up
From Slavery, “The Atlanta Exposition,” The Souls of Black Folk, etc. Which
philosopher had the best ideas for racial uplift, and why?
FOR YOUR ESSAY PAPER, You may include a discussion of literary themes,
rhetorical strategies, and literary elements used by these authors in your literary analysis.
Be sure to include, utilize, and parenthetically cite the assigned texts/materials from the
course (NO OUTSIDE SOURCES) to help textually support your claims and overall
literary analysis. Be sure to see HOW TO CITE anthologies or books with editors and
other sources in APA format for this selection. Use www.scribbr.com. The paper must
include a references list in APA style.
ESSAY REQUIREMENTS:

• Thesis statement in introduction, at least 3 major points
• 3-5 pages in length
• Double-spaced
• Parenthetical citations in APA format

• Times New Roman font type
• Size twelve (12) font
Four (4) conventions of writing about literature:
1. Assume a literate audience; don’t explain basic details; don’t retell/summarize the
narrative; analyze it.
2. Include titles and authors’ full names in the introduction. Thereafter, refer to authors
by last name only.
3. Use 3rd person. Don’t use 1st person singular (I) to state opinions; the reader knows
the opinions are yours.
4. Use present tense in literature; the book exists in the present every time someone
picks it up and reads it.
All papers must be in APA style & format.
• Papers must be cited parenthetically when referred to via quoting (directly or
indirectly), paraphrasing, or summarizing from the textbook. Outside sources are not
required but can be used.
• Plagiarism will not be tolerated. A grade of “F” will be assigned in the event that any
paper is found to include plagiarism. Do your own work. Do not use old VSU papers
or others’ work. Use SMARTHINKING for Helpance.
