I. Intro/Thesis:

The food choices individuals make have a big effect on the environment. As such, proper food choices lead to real environmental benefits including fewer toxic chemicals, reduced global warming, and resource preservation.

Problem:

a. Background/Cause of Problem 1: ____________________________________________________________________Food plays an important role when it comes to greenhouse gases. This is because foods such as meat emit nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide and hence increase the gases that lead to global warming.

Clark, Michael A., et al. “Multiple Health and Environmental Impacts of Foods.” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 116.46 (2019, November 12): 23357-23362.

b. Background/Cause of Problem 2:

More land and water are used on producing food leading to increased pressure on the environment and more emissions from the production center. This leads to air and soil pollution.

Effect of Problem 1:

The greenhouse gases have a negative impact on the environment. This is because these gases are a major cause of increased temperatures on the surface of the earth.

Research/Citations/Analysis of research (list possible sources/citations to use here):

Westhoek, Henk, et al. “Food Choices, Health and Environment: Effects of Cutting Europe’s Meat and Dairy Intake.” Global Environmental Change 26 (2014, May): 196-205.

c. Effect of Problem 2:

Agricultural sector contributes to 78% of eutrophication whereas livestock contributes to 95% to the world’s biodiversity. The changes in the environment result to soil pollution.

II. Solution to Problem:

a. Solution 1:

Choose Climate-Friendly Food

1. Effects of Solution 1 (how it will work/help):

a. Foods lower in the food chain spend less energy in processing and hence loess emissions into the environment. This reduces greenhouse gases.

b. Solution 2:

Buying organics as a way of rewarding the environmental performance

1. Effects of Solution 2 (how it will work/help):

a. Buying organics helps to prevent soil and air pollution because there is no use of fertilizers and pesticides. The use of pesticides threatens the quality of water and the health of the farmers and the communities.

III. Conclusion:

a. Quick Summary: _____________________________________________________________________The problem of global warming and land and air pollution can be overcome by buying and eating environmentally friendly foods. It can also be overcome by buying organic foods because they are grown free from fertilizers’ and pesticides.

b. So What? (Why care?):

It is thus important to care about how our diet affects the environment because the results are long term. Issues such as global warming are affecting availability of water and causing droughts.
