Romantic love is one of the most broadly shared, most invasive assumption and truth regarding the current society. No wonder the contemporary media is awash with examples of love. In this regard, my attention is drawn to the movie titled ‘50 Shades of Grey.’ The film is about a strong affectionate relationship between Anastasia Steele, a graduate from college, and Christian Grey, a young business mogul. Both strangely become attracted towards each other. Even though Ana is not sexually experienced, she throws herself headfirst into a relationship. She discovers that Christian’s real sexual inclinations push the limits of pain and pleasure.
Eros is one of the forms of love in Greek mythology. It refers to a passionate and sexual love. The word originates from the myth of Eros (known in Roman mythology as Cupid), one of the children of Aphrodite and the god of love and sex (Campbell 23). This kind of love entails sensual desire seen between couples. I have gained several insights by comparing the above mentioned film to Eros. One, the Eros kind of love is driven by passion. As seen in the “50 shades of Grey” film, Ana and Christian have an intense longing to be together. They are attracted to each other from the time they meet, and since then, they cannot seem to stand being apart. Secondly, the Eros kind of love is displayed through physical affection. In other words, it is a desire for another person’s physical body. The film is characterized by many erotic scenes. Ana and Christian engage in numerous romantic behaviors like kissing, sexual intercourse, etc. Lastly, Eros features a “desire to possess.” According to this myth, to love is to possess the object of love.
