I was very impressed by the film this week, the story was very compelling and related to what we've been reading, even aside from being educational, it was also just a good film. Even from the very beginning of the film, the way the child stopped and watched Mr. Jarvis ride past on his horse directly mirrored the way that Mandela spoke about White people very early in the book when he was a child, he spoke about how they were regarded as gods in a sense, especially for village children who had likely never had any interaction with White people. I've noticed too that throughout the mere 3 weeks we've been in this course, I've already learned so much about South Africa. The movies are very helpful with learning the pronunciation and just getting more of a feel for how the cities like Johannesburg and Sophiatown ran and looked, how people dressed, the state of different buildings, etc.

I think it was interesting how in the reading this week Mandela made a journey from the city, back to Qunu where he grew up, but in the film The main character had to make his way into the city and adapt to that very stimulating, fast paced world, in high contrast from what he was used to in his village. A great example of the stark differences in the ways of life in how when he first gotr into the city, a young man tried to steal his suitcase, and ended up robbing him. I also thought it was interesting with his sun carrying the revolver, because Mandela also mentions in his book how he carried a gun when he went to the city. It seems that people would carry guns for safety in the cities but it often only got them into trouble.

This modules theme that I detected was resiliency and could be seen in both Mandela and the Umfondisi. Mandela faced a lot of trial and tribulations in this particular portion of the book. From failing the LL.B. exam several times to having ban's placed on him which stunted his participation in the movement (at least publicly). However, Mandela only seen these as setbacks. Since he couldn't seem to pass the LL.B. test he opted to take the qualifying exam which allowed him to still practice and eventually led him to starting his own practice. Furthermore, he stayed active in the movements during his ban by holding secret meetings and participation. There were other great illustrations throughout the chapter that highlighted his resiliency such as the mistreatment at trials, not having their office space renewed, and a second banning; however, he never gave in to the government and his circumstances. He maintained his fight during the continued struggles in his life.

Umfondisi left his home to take the unwanted journey to the city. What originally began after receiving a letter that his sister was ill, became much more of a trial into his faith. While there he tracked down his brother and his son who had been charged with murder. Finding people was not easy as they had to go from place to place in search of his son and the daughter which he was asked to check on. While this takes great strength, it resulted in a bond between the two fathers and in the end, Jarvis ended up building another church for the Umfondisi and his congregation.

There were many points along the way that they both could have simply given up and been self-justified to do so; ultimately, they continued on.
