Fire Investigation
On October 21, 2007, a 10-year-old boy accidentally started one of the largest fire incidences in Southern California. The Buckweed fire started in the early afternoon in Agua Dulce, in Northern part of California. The fire was highly supported by winds and hot, dry weather to spread faster covering more than 38,000 acres (Parrish, 2007). Buckweed fire resulted in more than 15,000 people driven from their homes causing destruction of 21 houses and more than 22 other buildings. There was no death report linked to the fire but only three people were reported to have been injured in the fire incident.
After the fire was contained, investigators traced the cause of the fire to the young boy who admitted that he started the fire accidentally when he was playing with matches that led to the fire. The prosecutors in the case refused to file charges against the boy as they did not find any evidence of intent on the boy’s part. The case was referred to the county Department of Children and Family Services that would evaluate the situation of the boy at home to determine if there was a need for other interventions (Winton, 2007). The history of the boy according to people who knew him was with lack of problems and was under the good care of his parents. Buckweed fire resulted in the loss of millions of dollars property the damage that the boy’s parents were to be held civilly liable for. According to the state officials, the fire that is set with someone under the age of 12, his or her actions are rendered as “playing with fire” and not arson but the parents cater for the damaged caused by the fire. Most fires in the United States have been reported to be started with underage and juveniles with the widespread of the fire being the windy and dry weather.
