Tutorial 5
Activity:
Put yourself in the position of someone who has to select online resources in order to set an assignment for a group of master’s students. You are free to choose any subject area that interests you. You must select two online resources according to the following instructions:
1. Select one online resource that gives an overview or introduction to the topic.
2. Select a second resource that is an in-depth discussion of one aspect of the subject (such as a journal article)
These online resources must be:
a) Authoritative
b) Current
c) Have sufficient depth of content to be useful in an assignment
In groups of 3 or 4, discuss
a) How did you decide what the terms “authoritative”, “current” and “sufficient depth” mean?
b) What strategies did you adopt to find the resources that you chose?
Topic 4
Discuss your own experience in selecting resources. In relation to the criteria(Authoritative, Current, Sufficient depth) for evaluating information resources, comment on potential weaknesses in users’ information literacy and suggest strategies for improvement, e.g. types of services the Library might be able to offer.
• Back up your views by referring to this week’s readings and any additional material you may have identified.
