Both males and female have an equal chance in economic, social and even political arenas. Conceptually, this is what many would term as gender parity or more reasonably gender equality. Furthermore, this is contextually numerical and implies equal numbers and proportions of male and female in education, holding public office and job opportunities among others. There has been the concerted effort by various bodies to champion for balanced inclusion in various areas of the economy.
Men have been favored from the beginning mainly due to their unique physical ability, which has in the recent past rose to high levels and lead to a situation where women become discriminated. In a bid to address this, gender parity majorly focusses on ensuring an equal ratio of males and females in all the sectors. Women prioritize family over their career prospects thus becoming unable to progress especially in education due to engaging roles in the family. Women have a perception that climbing up the ladder in education or political class requires some unique characteristics. They have been suppressed by the male gender hence demotivating their progress. Irrespective of their potential, they have created their cage and surrounded themselves with limitation demarcations. They thus leave it to men. All these attitudes by women cause challenges in attaining gender parity.
Notwithstanding the above challenges, various policies can help attain gender parity. Education should be sensitive to gender, giving equal opportunities to both males and females. Women should also be involved during the making of crucial national and global decisions because this gives them a platform to address their concerns. Strict laws should also be put in place to protect girls from early marriages and any form of harassment. In conclusion, gender parity can be actualized if all of us become active in addressing it in our areas of the profession.
