HIS-121(American History) Week 1 Critical Thinking Exercise

Learning Goal: I’m working on a history exercise and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

In at least two well-developed paragraphs (and a paragraph is at least five to seven sentences) discuss the following:

Part 1: Compare the lifestyle, economic, and religious differences between the three different colonies(The intended topic was to compare and contrast the Northern, Middle, and Southern colonies.)

Part 2: Choose one colony, pretend you live there and are writing a letter to a relative in England about your lifestyle, what religion you practice, and how your family is faring in North America.

The guidelines for this assignment are:

The Northern, Middle, and Southern colonies in America had different lifestyles, economic systems, and religious practices. The Northern colonies, such as Massachusetts and Connecticut, had a primarily Puritan population. These colonies were known for their religious devotion and strict moral code. They had a strong work ethic, and their economy was based on trade and manufacturing. The Middle colonies, such as New York and Pennsylvania, were known for their diversity of religious practices and ethnic groups. They were also home to many Quakers and had a more tolerant attitude towards different religious practices. Their economy was based on agriculture and trade. The Southern colonies, such as Virginia and Maryland, had a primarily Anglican population. These colonies were based on the cultivation of cash crops, such as tobacco, rice, and indigo. The Southern colonies had a more hierarchical society, with a large number of enslaved Africans working the plantations.
hiIf I were living in the Southern colonies, I would write to my relative in England about the lifestyle in North America. I would tell them about the warm climate and fertile soil that makes it possible to grow profitable cash crops like tobacco, rice and indigo. I would also explain that the labor for these crops is done by enslaved Africans, and how the economy of the Southern colonies is heavily dependent on the institution of slavery. I would tell them about the luxury and grandeur of plantation life, but also about the harsh realities of owning human property.
