According to statistics, the 65 plus population in the United States is projected to double in the next thirty years. This, combined with the nation-wide shortage or nurses, will create more demand for nurses and put more pressure on the entire medical workforce. Many people may prefer taking care of their aging loved ones, but with tight schedules and most patients requiring 24-hour nursing care, it is not always possible. The relatives end up opting to take them to nursing homes where they can receive proper care.
Working in a nursing home is different from working in a normal hospital or clinic. As a nurse, these tips will make your working experience easier and more fruitful.
1. Listen more, talk less
In a typical nursing home, you are likely to encounter some elderly folks who talk a lot. Listen to them even if they are just mumbling. Instead of ignoring or telling them to be quiet, be friendly, and patient with them. Sometimes all they need is little more attention.
2. Patience is key
Your patients, are most likely to be slow to comprehend basic instructions or perform simple tasks. Be patient and compassionate with them, assuring them that you are there for them whenever they need you.
3. The power of humor
These old folks also have stories to tell. Once in a while, you can strike up conversations and crack jokes with them. Make fun and laugh with them as you interact. You might be surprised at how fun and easy your job is. These random talks can be valuable in making them feel loved and developing trust relationships with them.
4. Smile!
You might not always be happy, and that is okay. However, always try to maintain a smile as you interact with your patients. These types of patients are vulnerable, and the main goal is to remain hospitable, cheerful, and calm with them.
5. Teamwork is paramount
Maintaining teamwork in a nursing home setting is extremely crucial. As a nurse, try to maintain a positive work relationship with the entire team, including those from other departments like in music, recreation, and therapy. As such, they will be willing to help you whenever you need help with your patients.
Working in a nursing home is special and different. It takes a special person with good interpersonal skills to take care of the most vulnerable persons in their final years. Be a good listener, patient, funny, cheerful, and above all, maintain teamwork and a hospitable environment for everyone in the nursing home.
