In your initial post, consider the Four Prototypic Dimensions of Parenting and address the following:
1. Which style best describes the approach used by your parents/guardians when you were growing up?
2. Which style do you (or would you) use with your children?
3. What impact do you think the parenting-style you experienced growing up has had on you? Has it influenced (or would it influence) your style as a parent?

Dimensions of Parenting
Parental behavior has two general dimensions. First, the degree of warmth and responsiveness expressed by parents to their children is the first dimension. Second, the amount of control parents exert over their children. Combining warmth and control yields four prototypic dimensions of parenting:

Four Prototypic Dimensions of Parenting
Authoritarian
• Parenting Style: Authoritarian parents are controlling but uninvolved.
• Effect of Parents on Children: Children with authoritarian parents are often unhappy, have low self-esteem, and are frequently overly aggressive.

Authoritative
• Parenting Style: Authoritative parents are fairly controlling but are also responsive to their children.
• Effect of Parents on Children: Children with authoritative parents tend to have higher grades and are responsible, self-reliant, and friendly.

Indulgent
• Parenting Style: Indulgent-permissive parents love but exert little control.
• Effect of Parents on Children: Children with permissive parents are often impulsive and have little self-control.

Indifferent
• Parenting Style: Indifferent-uninvolved parents are neither warm nor controlling.
• Effect of Parents on Children: Children with indifferent- uninvolved parents often do poorly in school and are aggressive.

How Can Parents Influence Their Children?
How exactly can parents influence their children? Good question. Take a look below at three specific behavioral ways that parents can influence their children:

Direct Instruction: Direct instruction involves telling a child what to do, when, and why. Direct instruction paired with parental “coaching” helps children master social and emotional skills.
Modeling: Modeling combined with young children’s observational learning leads to imitation. Observational learning can also produce counter-imitation, learning what should not be done by observing the behavior.

Consider the Four Prototypic Dimensions of Parenting in your first post and discuss the following:
1. Which of the following styles best defines your parents’/guardians’ approach to you as a child?

2. What style do you use (or would use) with your children?

3. What effect do you believe your parents’ parenting style had on you as a child? Has it influenced (or would it influence) your parenting style?
