Today Taiwan continues to improve its working conditions for foreigners or expatriates willing to take up employment in the country. Recent decades have seen Taiwan economy bounce from economic crisis to become one of the leading economies in Asia (Hsu & Liao, 2015). In addition, its unemployment figures remains among the lowest compared to other global economies (Nadash & Shih, 2012). As such, with a growing economy and favorable working environment for expatriates, Taiwan is provides a good working destination for Russians willing to work abroad. However, before obtaining a work permit in Taiwan, expatriates must several legal obligations which revolve the type of work or company to work in and this paper highlights some of these requirements.
Any foreigner willing to visit Taiwan either for leisure or business has get any of the five types of visa available to foreigners. The visas are the diplomatic visitor’s Courtesy, resident visa or working holiday visa (Hsu & Liao, 2015). Of these five types of Visa’s, Russians or any other foreigners willing to work in Tiawan should seek to obtain the working-holiday visa and the resident visa. In order to obtain these Visas, Taiwan law requires that applicants should have a valid passport for not less than six months, healthcare certificate and an allein resident certificate (Hsu & Liao, 2015). Moreover, obtaining a work permit is mandatory for any foreigner willing to work in Taiwan.
To obtain these legal documents, Foreigners are required to contact Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor. However, it is worth noting that foreigners willing to work in Taiwan are restricted to working in only specific sectors of the economy namely; Specialist technicians, CEOs of foreign companies, school teachers mainly language schools, and other fields such as arts, sports or entertainment (Chang & Bain, 2006). Taiwan labor laws require that foreigners can only obtain a work permit for a specific job from a given employer and these permits should not be valid for a period of more than three years (Chen, & Lawler, 2013). However, in case an individual’s changes their employer before their work permit expires; they will have to apply a new work permit afresh.
