Hi, my name is J.M. and I've been working in the medical field since I was 16 years old. I've been a nurse for 25 years, with the last 10 years dedicated to mental health care. Together, as a community, we can raise funds for research, provide information, and end the stigma that still surrounds mental health issues. I implore the government to defend the constitutionally protected freedom of all citizens to seek help for their mental health without fear of reprisal.

Bill 1109, An Act Relative to Student Mental Health Services in 2019, has my enthusiastic support. Promoting healthy individuals, families, and communities on a national scale requires the development of resources in community schools, which is why this law is so important.

The state of the country's mental health is an issue that touches everyone. Whether it's a member of our own family, a close friend, or a neighbor, we all know at least one person who has been diagnosed with a mental disorder. It has an impact on our educational institutions and the youngsters that attend them. As a step toward a better future for our kids and for the good of the community at large, let's pass this law.

Homelessness, lack of coping skills, hopelessness, and addiction are issues I regularly encounter in my work with adults. It begs the question of whether or not to invest in mental health services earlier in life. Physical and mental health depend on the same set of factors: awareness, education, and prevention. Constant attention to one's mental health is as necessary as that paid to one's physical health. Evidence in support of
I’m J.M., a registered nurse, and I’ve been in the medical industry for 30 years, starting when I was just 16 years old. I have worked as a nurse for 25 years, the last decade of which I have focused on behavioral health nursing. In order to promote awareness, educate the public, and remove the stigma associated with mental illness, society must come together in our communities. I call on the government to speak up and fight for everyone’s right to receive therapy and intervention for their mental health without fear or retaliation.

I am in support of Bill 1109 Mental Health Services for Students 2019. The need for this bill is critical to developing the resources in community schools to identify, address and intervene in promoting healthy individuals, families and our communities nationwide.

Mental health affects the entire nation, either directly or indirectly. We all know someone who has been diagnosed with a mental illness, whether it be a family member, a friend or a neighbor. Our schools and our children are affected. Let us pass this bill to make our children’s future brighter and for the betterment of the community.

I currently work in the adult population and have found common problems including homelessness, poor coping skills, hopelessness, and addiction. It raises the question of improving mental health services and starting to have these resources at an early age. Awareness, education, and prevention are fundamental to a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally. It is essential that the mind needs just as much care as the body. Supporting evidence

Are you concerned that the United States has fifty-seven times the number of school shootings than other countries? 2009-2018 there were 288 school shootings. In 2018 alone, 35 people died as a result of school shootings; over 19,000 students exposed to violence, the two largest occurred in Florida (February) and Texas (May). (Education Week, 2018)

Can you imagine yourself or your loved one being at a school during such a tragic event? Each incidence is terrifying for students, faculty, families, and communities nationwide. We must fight for our children and for the community to stop this. Two hundred eighty- eight school shootings in 9 years? We must stand together to provide resources.

Nikolas Cruz the Florida School shooter findings included that his mother died in November of 2018, he had a history of being held back, expelled, interested in the military and enjoyed hunting. A student that had classes with Cruz stated: “I was not surprised.” (Chuck, Elizabeth; Johnson, Alex; Siemaszako, Corky, 2018)

Dimitrios Pagourtzis is the seventeen-year-old shooter that killed ten people in Texas, after sneaking in a shotgun and revolver and open fired, as well as two homemade explosive devices found. Dimitrios was described as very bright, quiet, an introvert. A sister had been harshly bullied at the school and had to transfer to another school.

Minimal warning signs felt the only red flag was the Facebook picture of the born to kill tee-shirt. A student did state they were not surprised “It’s been happening everywhere. I felt like eventually, it was going to happen here too”. Another student described in detail how he watched his classmate shoot students in his school, bodies lying on the ground, students hiding in classrooms, watching a student shot in the head. (Fernandez, Manny; Fausset, Richard; Bidgood, Jess, 2018)

The statements by students are sad and tragic, this is not something that students should expect, but the reality is that is happening. 288 shootings in 10 years is a huge problem.

President Trump had made the following statement related to these school shootings. “My Administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our

students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and others. Everyone must work together at every level of government to keep our children safe”. (Berenson, Retrieved 2019)

Additional Amendment
An additional safety aspect of adding is an anonymous safety hotline via phone, email or website to encourage students to report concerns, reach out and ask for help to be available in every school nationwide.

The state of Pennsylvania has started the “safe to say” website and has been available since January of this year to promote awareness, anonymous tips to encourage students to call related to threats, welfare checks, and concerns. Facts include that “1,000,000 students feel threatened, harassed or bullied. 80% of school shooters divulge plans to one person, 59% tell more than one person, and 70% of people who have suicided either had warning signs or told someone of their plans”. (Safe 2 say something, 2019)

The anonymous tip line gives students the tools and feeling of reassurance of reporting concerns. Promoting safety for our children, our schools and our communities is imperative. Mental health affects everyone, so the more we encourage and educate the awareness of mental wellness, can increase and rid the stigma. Let us help one another and teach our children to help themselves and each other.

Week 4 Assignment

Assignment: Legislation Comparison Grid and Testimony/Advocacy Statement

As a nurse, how often have you thought to yourself, If I had anything to do about it, things would work a little differently? Increasingly, nurses are beginning to realize that they do, in fact, have a role and a voice.

Many nurses encounter daily experiences that motivate them to take on an advocacy role in hopes of impacting policies, laws, or regulations that impact healthcare issues of interest. Of course, doing so means entering the less familiar world of policy and politics. While many nurses do not initially feel prepared to operate in this space effectively, the reward is the opportunity to shape and influence future health policy.
