This week in Module 7, we discussed The Romantic Era. I mentioned in our lecture notes how composers in The Romantic Era took many of the ideas from the previous Classical Era and took them a step further in many musical directions. For this discussion, I would like to compare a movement from a Classical symphony with that of a Romantic Symphony and discuss the differences.

Listen to Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major (Surprise), Movement II. Then, listen to Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Movement III. Both of these listening examples are ones we have heard previously in our course and I will link them below. After listening to both pieces, compare each of their Instrumentation, Melody, Harmony, and Expression/Musical Mood with each other. When listening and comparing the works, keep in mind the larger changes that occurred between the Classical and Romantic Eras. If you need to review these changes, make sure to see the “Era Summaries” in the textbook (Page 215 for Classical and Page 309 for Romantic).
Make Sure to Address The Following:

Listen to Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major (Surprise), Movement II
Listen to Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 in F Major, Movement III
Compare both works discussing their Instrumentation, Melody, Harmony, and Expression/Musical Mood.
For instrumentation, also make sure to discuss the differences in the orchestra itself different between the two works?
For harmony, make sure to discuss if it is is darker or heavier in the Haydn or the Brahms.
