Microsoft Hypervisors Case Study
According to Shah (2013), Microsoft Hyper-V Server refers to a Windows Server virtualization platform designed for information technology professionals using the Windows operating system. The server facilitates its users to run or develop virtual machine software, expand and establish private cloud environments and the virtual desktop infrastructure while improving business continuity in the process. Among the key features associated with this server include the configurable computing environment, remote connectivity, integration services, and back and disaster recovery (Shah, 2019). Based on this description, Hyper-V Server should be regarded as a key component of the windows server. This discussion explores two companies, namely Nutanix and Amazon, that use Hyper-V Server virtualization and determine how they distinguish themselves based on specific aspects like Scalability, Performance, Security, and Flexible Infrastructure.
Nutanix, Inc specializes in cloud computing and the sale of cloud services, hyper-converged infrastructure software, and developing software-defined storage. Nutanix has managed to leverage the Microsoft Hyper-V Server to provide its customers with a hybrid cloud infrastructure with a lot of simplicity, flexibility, and the cost efficiency necessary to manage infrastructure and applications in multiple public and private clouds. Using Microsoft Hyper-V Server, the Nutanix platform has managed to deliver scalability, web-scale performance, and data management covering VMware and virtualized systems based on the KVM infrastructure. Nutanix (2020) explains that with the recent release of the NOS 3.5.2, more benefits exist. The company can now adopt a virtualized infrastructure that runs on the Windows Server 2012 R2 containing Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012 R2 with a Hyper-V SMB 3.0 storage. These additions have allowed Nutanix to provide its customers with the flexibility and scalability to choose hypervisors and all other converged platforms. This choice has enhanced the security and performance of the Nutanix platform and contributed to the availability, which allows customers to run on various workloads and applications existing on different hypervisors.
Another company using Microsoft Hyper-V Server is Amazon EC2, which has allowed it to develop a dependable and fast environment for application deployment through the Microsoft web platform (Amazon, 2020). The Amazon EC2 allows users to run compatible Windows-based solutions, contributing to high performance, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. Among the common Microsoft Hyper-V Server applications at Amazon includes hosting on Enterprise Windows-based application, data processing, distributed testing, and web-service hosting (Amazon, 2020). These applications have ensured that Amazon has managed to provide its customers with a Secure, Flexible, and Available platform.
Comparing VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V
Recently, VMware managed to introduce a new free hypervisor version referred to as the vSphere hypervisor. Microsoft has also taken similar steps by releasing several virtualization products, with the most recent one being the Hyper-V. Hyper-V was initially released as the type 1 hypervisor comprising of Windows 8. However, since then, no more releases have taken place.
Scalability:
With VMware, it can support 64 hosts within a cluster. This cluster can accommodate more than 8000 VMs. In most cases, a single host comprises 480 logical processors with 6tb physical memory. On the other hand, Hyper-V has similar scalability with its ability to support 64 nodes in every cluster and more than 8000 VMs. Individual Hyper-V host can accommodate approximately 512 logical processors with 24 tb physical memory or 2048 virtual CPUs in every host (Olzak et al., 2010)
Security:
VMware can deliver security that is comprehensive built-in. Moreover, it also comes with enhanced logging capacities that can provide forensic information regarding a user’s actions. Additionally, VMware offers a comprehensive end-to-end policy that is driven by a well-secured architecture. However, in contrast, Microsoft Hyper-v enhances its security features to protect virtual machines that run over the windows server 2016 (Shah, 2019).
