Topic 4 Assignment Sample Solution
Application of Nursing Theories

Introduction

Nursing theory is an organized set of principles and goals that are meant to guide nursing practice in the real world. Nursing theories are structured frameworks that are based on facts and decide what nurses can do. Health care professionals use nursing theories to explain what a nurse does, what the goal of a nursing career is, and what the goals of the nursing field might be (Brando et al., 2019). Nursing theory is based on the person getting care from a nurse, the environment and situations that affect nurses, patients, and healthcare systems, the patient’s state and the health care professionals, and, finally, the things nurses do to give care. The nursing theories give nurses a basic understanding of how to care for patients and help them explain their roles and responsibilities to clients. This is especially important because it lets nurses talk about the evidence that supports the strategies that form the basis of their work.

Why using nursing theory in patient care is important

The goal of using nursing theories to help take care of patients is for nurse professionals to use nursing theories to strengthen nursing practice, improve therapeutic methods, and give patients better clinical care for a better quality of life. The nursing process uses nursing theories. (Brando et al., 2019) Nursing theories can also help nurses understand why they need to use nursing interventions, what will happen if they do, and how they can improve their skills to keep taking care of patients.

Using nursing theories can help registered nurses review and evaluate their care plans better and predict what will happen in important situations. Younas and Quennell (2019) say that understanding nursing theory can also help registered nurses use their experience to build and test new theories that will be used in the future in evidence-based practice. For example, being culturally competent means paying attention, being polite, and knowing about each patient’s ethnic background and needs. Culture affects how people talk, think, believe, and feel, which can affect their health records and care choices (Younas & Quennell, 2019 NUR 513 Topic 4 Assignment Paper). Nursing theories help nurses learn more about how to use cultural competence in their work and improve the outcomes for their patients.

How important nursing theory is to what nurses do now

The things nurses do and why they do them are based on theories about nursing. Several nursing models give a framework for figuring out how to improve the outcomes for patients. Without theories, the nursing framework would lose the sequential view that naturally links back to patients and their health-related needs (Smith & Gullett, 2021). Nurses use the theories to help set up ways for a health care facility to give care that are in line with several goals. While big nursing theories help build a framework, middle-range and practice-level theories allow nurses and specific healthcare situations to be held accountable in a representative democracy. To understand the nursing concept, you need to know these things. They give nurses a basic understanding of care ideas that lets them do their jobs well. This is especially important because it lets nurses point out the evidence that backs up the methods they use.

Roy Adaptation Model Application in Nursing

Nurses can focus on the purpose of nursing and how it is used when they use nursing models. Also, it encourages patient care that is planned, organized, regulated, and successful. The Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) is a model that is often used in nursing. According to the RAM, the nurse’s job is to get people to follow the rules and improve the quality and length of life (Smith & Gullett, 2021). The RAM evaluates the patient in four different ways: physiology, self-concept, role function, and interdependence. This gives the patient a complete treatment plan.

In the Roy adaptation model, nurses agree that patients’ needs should be met before plans are made. The physiological model has to do with how a person’s body reacts to outside factors in the paradigm (Browning Callis, 2020). It includes all of the physiochemical processes that happen when a person goes about their daily life. The physiological mode needs are based on physiologic integrity and are made up of nine critical physiologic requirements that the nurse must make sure the patient has: 1) oxygenation, 2) nutrition, 3) excretion, 4) exercise and rest, 5) protection, 6) perceptions, 7) fluid-electrolyte balance, 8) neurological function, and 9) endocrine function. In the RAM self-concept mode, a person shows a mix of ideas and feelings about him or herself or about other people. The way a person thinks, acts, and believes shapes who they are (Browning Callis, 2020). The role function mode takes care of the patient’s major roles, sex roles, secondary roles, and tertiary roles in society so that social integrity can be kept.

In current practice, the theory could be put into action before planning and giving treatment by having nurses come up with interventions that are specific to each patient. This would help patients who are trying to adapt to a certain situation or disease process. This shows that the patients will get used to their new lives and that their quality of life will get better. Using RAM theory to plan care for a patient makes the situation easier and lets nurses focus on their job and provide holistic care in a biopsychosocial way for the patients they are caring for (Browning Callis, 2020). So, nursing care should focus more on planning and do a better job of putting plans into action.

Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory: A Patient’s Point of View

Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory is a good way to think about how nurses should work in basic health care settings. By putting Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory into practice, registered nurses can treat a patient as a part of their family and society as a whole (Yip, 2021). Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory can help a nurse see a patient as a person who can create, improve, and use a self-care plan. Adopting the model theory has a practical benefit in that it lets nurses evaluate their clinical practice using measures that are important to nurses (Yip, 2021). So, Orem’s theory gives nurses a good way to think about how they care for patients and a better understanding of how nursing practice and basic healthcare are always changing and adapting.
