Nursing Informatics and Emerging Trends
Name
Institution
Nursing Informatics has proven to have great potential in the provision of effective and safe healthcare within the nursing practice. One of the most outstanding emerging trends is the use of electronic health records and the other is the use of telemedicine which have both contributed positively towards quality healthcare outcomes (Vernic, 2012).Despite the emerging trends being capable to bring positive outcomes, nurses have to combine their application to nursing practice with the change of practice in terms of behaviour and attitude towards the patients. Cultural humility and patient-centred care are among activities that have to be included for the technological trends to be fully effective.
Cultural humility refers to involves creating a welcoming culture to people from diverse backgrounds in terms of ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation among others (Ruud, 2018). Person-centred care refers to providing personalized care according to the individual needs of the patient. Involving the patient in their own healthcare process is more of person-centred care that contributes to patients feeling more responsible for their health. Mental health issues, for example, are caused by a range of factor which could be hereditary, age, financial, or family crisis among others. It is only through trust that a mentally ill patient will open up to the nurse which then enhances the quality of care and the outcome (Dixon et al., 2016). Through the practice, patients gain trust in the nurse and provide helpful information that may be recorded in the EHRs systems hence improving diagnosis and treatment (Mariano, 2013). Being culturally sensitive to persons from the LGBTQ community promotes their access to healthcare. Since it may be stigmatizing for them is come parts of the society to physically access healthcare, communicating with them through phone, telemedicine enables them to access healthcare in a safe environment.
Different groups benefit from different trends and hence nurses have to be careful about which activity they have to input to make the healthcare practice convenient and safe for the patients. As seen, person-centred care builds nurse-patient trust hence, enabling detailed medical history for documentation in the EHRs. On the other hand, exercising cultural humility to the LGBTQ persons promotes their access to healthcare facilities and more o through the use of telemedicine.
