PATIENT EDUCATION
PT NAME, AGE, & WT IF PEDIATRIC:
Armstrong, Lilly; 8 y/o; 30kg
NAME OF MEDICATION:
Mupirocin 2% cream (Bactroban)
DOSAGE, ROUTE, & FREQUENCY:
Apply cream to lesions 3 times daily for 5 days
INDICATION/DIAGNOSIS:
Impetigo
POSSIBLE ADVERSE REACTIONS:
Usually well tolerated but may cause:
Burning/stinging of the lesion (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Rash/redness/itchiness (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Rarely causes anaphylaxis or angioedemia (Lexicomp, n.d.).
HEALTH PROMOTIONS RELATED TO DIAGNOSIS AND MEDICATION:
Impetigo is highly contagious (Arcangelo et al., 2022). Avoid contact with infants, other children, and older adults (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Avoid touching, itching, or picking at lesions.
Practice proper hygiene and wash hands frequently (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Wash hands before and after applying cream.
Wear gloves while applying cream.
Use a gloved fingertip or cotton swab to apply cream to lesion. Do not touch the container directly to the lesion.
Do not apply cream in nose or eyes. It may cause severe burning (Lexicomp, n.d.). Rinse eyes thoroughly with water if this does occur (Lexicomp, n.d.).
You may cover the lesions with a bandaid to prevent contact with the lesion and spread of the infection (Lexicomp, n.d.).
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop a new rash, itchiness, increased redness or swelling or your child develops a fever (Lexicomp, n.d.).
Seek immediate medical attention if facial swelling, swelling of the neck, or difficulty breathing occurs (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Contact your health care provider if the lesions do not resolve after 5 days of treatment (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
CLINICAL INFORMATION
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Mupirocin binds to transfer-RNA synthetase which inhibits protein synthesis within the bacteria cells (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Persons who are allergic to the drug (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
Intranasal forms of the drug should not be used with any other intranasal products (Arcangelo et al., 2022).
WARNINGS/PRECAUTIONS:
If a new rash, anaphylasix or angioedema occurs discontinue use (Lexicomp, n.d.).
Cream is not for intranasal or ophthalmic use(Lexicomp, n.d.).
May cause severe burning (Lexicomp, n.d.).
INTERACTIONS:
There are currently no known interactions (Lexicomp, n.d.)
SPECIAL POPULATION CONSIDERATIONS:
Use with caution in those with renal impairment, studies have not been done in this population(Lexicomp, n.d.)
Avoid use in neonates and in people with extensive burns/open wounds (Lexicomp, n.d.). Some dosages contain propylene glycol which can be cause fatal toxicities in large amounts via topical, oral, and intravenous routes (Lexicomp, n.d.).
Intranasal Mupirocin is not approved for pediatric use in the U.S.
In adults, intranasal Murpirocin is more likely to cause the above listed adverse effects as well as:
Headaches/dizziness
Rhinitis
Respiratory congestion
Pharyngitis
Cough
Bloody noses
