Chapter One Questions Response
What do you believe is the most helpful aspect of using manuals such as the DSM-5 in the diagnostic process? The Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals for Mental Disorders (DSM) such as DSM-5 are important manuals as they are used by therapists, clinicians, counselors, psychiatrists, and others working in the mental health professionals to diagnose mental disorders. In clinical practice, DSMs are important since they help to describe symptoms as they relate to specific mental disorders as well as in providing gender and age-based statistics on mental illnesses. The manual also helps describe the different treatment approaches available for a specific mental disorder as well as the effects such treatment has on the patient (Black & Grant, 2014). By describing symptoms as they relate to specific mental disorders, DSMs are able to eliminate possible confusion in the diagnosis of closely-related disorders. Describing symptoms of specific disorders is the most helpful aspect of using manuals such as DSM-5.
Do you believe that use of the DSM as a diagnostic/assessment tool will facilitate your practice experience? Why or why not? Since their introduction, DSMs have helped inform and characterize mental disorders and have provided for uniform diagnosis. Through the manuals, mental health professions have been able to have a common reference point in which clinical decisions in mental health are largely founded. By describing the symptoms as they relate to specific mental disorders, DSMs have been critical in mental health diagnosis/assessment (Black & Grant, 2014). The use DSMs in my practice will facilitate mental diagnosis as well as to inform the best treatment option by informing the symptoms, treatment, and possible outcomes. Other than this, the use of DSM will help in classifying patient for billing needs. This way, the use of DSM will be critical in my professional practice as they will help in making clinical decisions through the care process. PCN-540 Topic 2 Assignment Questions
Chapter Two Questions Response
Is it important for mental health practitioners to be aware of the DSM and the ICD, and if so, why? It is very important for mental health practitioners to be aware of both the DSM and ICD in their daily practice. Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals (DSM) and International Classification of Disease (ICD) are two important criteria used in disease classification and description (Saxena, WHO, & APA (2012). Both manuals are important to mental health practitioners as they help provide mental health symptoms and guidelines for mental disorders diagnosis. While DSM is developed and issued by the APA, ICD is developed and issued by the World Health Organization. Through the two criteria, mental health practitioners are able to give uniform diagnosis both in the US and on the international front.
List two reasons that culture is so important
to consider in the diagnostic assessment
According to Dziegielewski (2015), culture is an important aspect of mental health diagnosis assessment as it relates to values, understanding, behavior, and practices. One of the reasons why culture is an important consideration in the diagnosis assessment is that it helps mental health caregivers to understand a client’s personal belief towards the condition.
Through culture, individuals develop ethnic identities which help influence thinking and feeling and patterns of behavior. Culture identities also help define bonds and relations among individuals which are important in mental health diagnosis assessment (Kirmayer, & Ryder, 2016). Bonds and relations in assessment diagnosis are important as they help define and dictate support groups and clarify decisions taken.
