Facing Physical Change. This chapter outlines the many physical age-related changes that all adults face as they mature. Name two specific changes, each in a different area, that concern you (for example, male or female pattern hair loss may be a change in appearance that you dread, or losing smell and taste may be a change in sensation and perception may seem particularly sad). When do you anticipate these changes? Will they be inevitable or are there things you can do about them?
The Price of Appearing Youthful. In some cultures, retaining the appearance of youth is given high priority. However, it comes at a cost. Think of a celebrity or athlete who is championed for a youthful appearance or unexpected strength in midlife. What is required to “turn back time” on the physical changes discussed in this chapter?

One of the physical age-related changes that concerns me is the decline in cognitive function. As we age, our ability to recall information, make decisions, and process information can decline. This change is inevitable and can be concerning, especially as I plan for my future and want to remain sharp and independent as I get older. I anticipate this change to happen in my late 60s or 70s.
To counter this change, I am taking proactive steps to maintain my cognitive function. I engage in regular physical exercise, which has been shown to improve brain health and cognitive function. I also challenge myself by learning new skills and engaging in mentally stimulating activities, such as playing strategy games and reading. Additionally, I aim to maintain a healthy diet that is rich in antioxidants and other nutrients that support brain health.
Another change that concerns me is a decline in physical mobility. As I age, I worry about losing my ability to move around freely and independently. This change is also inevitable, but I hope to delay it as much as possible by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and engaging in regular physical activity. I anticipate this change happening in my 70s or 80s, but I will do my best to maintain my mobility for as long as possible.
Regarding the cost of appearing youthful, the desire to maintain a youthful appearance often requires a significant investment of time and resources. In some cultures, this may involve undergoing cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts and Botox injections, as well as regular exercise and strict dietary regimens. In some cases, celebrities and athletes may also use performance-enhancing drugs or other methods to maintain their youth and strength.
While the desire to maintain a youthful appearance is understandable, it is important to consider the cost of these efforts, both in terms of time and resources, as well as any potential health risks associated with cosmetic procedures and performance-enhancing drugs. Instead, I believe it is important to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and accepting the physical changes that come with aging, while embracing the wisdom and experiences that come with maturity.
