Assignment Description
Assignment 1 is divided into two parts. Description and Tasks of both parts are given in the
following sections.
Assignment 1-Part A: [20 Marks]
1. Computer Organisation and Architecture [ 10 marks]
a) Discuss with examples, the relationship between computer organization and
computer architecture. [5 Marks]
b) Discuss the use of a multiple-bus architecture compared to the use of a single-bus
architecture with some demonstration of its benefits to the computing applications
overall. [5 Marks]
2. Potential Computer Problems and Solutions [8 marks]
Analyse each of the following potential computer problems and provide a systematic method
of troubleshooting and resolving each.
a) You press the computer’s ON switch, but the machine does not switch on. [4 Marks]
b) The computer is ON — at least, according to the lights on the case — but you cannot
see any images on the monitor. [4 Marks]
References in IEEE style [2 Marks]
Assignment 1-Part B: [45 Marks]
1. Feedback and Reflection [3 marks]
Reflect on the feedback for Part A and discuss how did it help you to accomplish the tasks for
the assignment Part B.
2. Cache Memory [10 marks]
What are advantages of using a cache? With help of suitable figures differentiate among
direct mapping, associative mapping, and set associative mapping. List advantages of a unified
cache.
3. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) [5 marks]
Explain the basic differences between a CPU and a GPU. Discuss the importance of memory
capacity and clock speed for GPUs.
4. Binary, Decimal, Octal and Hexadecimal Number Conversions [12 Marks]
With step-by step process, perform the following conversion:
a) Covert (123.72)10 to binary and Hexadecimal.
b) Convert (110101111)2 to decimal, octal, and Hexadecimal representation.

c) Find the 8-bit two’s complement expression for the decimals value of 1n2 (where n
represents the last digit of your MIT ID)
5. IEEE754 Format [12 Marks]
With step-by step process, convert (-1xx.xx)10 to IEEE754 16-bit and 32-bit floating point
formats (where xx represents the last two digits of your MIT ID).
6. References in IEEE style [3 Marks]
Assignment Instructions:
• Do not use Wikipedia as a source or a reference
• Make sure you properly reference any diagrams/ graphics used in the assignment.
• Must consider at least six current references (two for part A and four for part B) from
journal/conference papers and books. Must follow IEEE referencing style.
