Then 100 word response to this classmate Joyce:
Hi Professor and class,
I recall learning about the NYS Nurse Practice Act while in nursing school as I had to complete my application online. I can honestly say that I am not familiar enough with the Nurse Practice Act and all the rules and regulations. However, I know it is my responsibility to become familiar with the guidelines, especially being a new nurse of 1 year. According to Finkelman (2020) “All nurses should be knowledgeable about their state’s practice act and use this law and its related rules and regulations as a guide in making decisions about issues and complaints to the board.”(p. 70)
I felt good reviewing the Nurse Practice Act, which was well needed. What I learned that I did not see or read the first time was the requirements regarding Limited Permits and New Graduate Practice. According to NCSBN (2022), to be eligible for a limited permit, you must not have taken the NCLEX-RN exam before. You must apply for an RN limited permit. Also, you must meet all the NYS requirements excluding the NCLEX-RN. Although an RN can work temporarily to provide care, it is required that the RN graduate only works in the unit when supervised by an RN supervisor. The temporary permit is valid for up to 1 year or 10 days after failing the NCLEX exam. After 10 days employment is ceased. However, the RN can request to obtain a new limited permit; which they can work while waiting to retake the NCLEX exam.
I believe as a leader/ manager it is important to be aware as well as understand the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act. Being aware will allow the nursing supervisor to be able to Help and provide guides to her nursing team. According to Finkelman (2020), all nurses are leaders, therefore knowing the rules and regulation increases a nurse’s skills and promotes growth.
