THEORY
Reflection and Discuss what theory is as well its purpose giving examples?
THEORY
A theory is a pensive and rational explanation of a certain phenomenon or rather the outcome of such thinking thereto. Generally, theories take diverse structures and still they go a head of a phenomenon to comprehensively explain procedures, variables and even core principles which have been hidden or unexplained. Theories can be tested or untested and in this case scenario of crime and justice, theories herein can be extensively tested based on different legal principles which form part of a community.
In establishing a theory, researchers use different but closely related terminologies in interpreting and explaining their findings and depending on the field of study. The purposes of theories include giving a researcher an understanding from an observation. The tentative question of “why” is usually formed from a theory and is usually referred to as a hypothesis or a research question. The theory of social facilitation and inhibition aids in organization especially in extensive numbers that may raise refutation (“Phenomena and theories – Research methods in psychology,” 2015). Considering the memory of human beings, the theory will offer a reason and sense of organisation especially in statistics. Theories offer utmost guidance to researchers in what is likely to happen in the future or even in new situations hence a tool of prediction.
Theories create room for new research, for example the theory of repeat offenders being tried and charged differently from one-time offenders to attain justice. This theory generates interesting questions of research and room for new ideologies. This also serves as room to generate new and efficient rules and ideas to fit the modern trend. Significantly, to serve its cause, a theory does not have to be precise or accurate (“Theory: A scientific concept,” n.d.). Such inaccurate theories may offer interesting research questions and a result generate a new direction to avoid inaccuracy and offer new findings.
