Purpose
The student previously analyzed their performance on the integrated comprehensive assessments and reflected on areas of opportunity and strategies to promote NCLEX-RN success and transition into practice. The student will now apply the priority concept (topic) to evidence-based professional practice upon which nurses have the ability to resolve or have a positive impact. There is a focus on the healthcare disparities of the individual, as well as ethical and legal implications to professional practice. The student will discuss how an interdisciplinary approach promotes quality improvement for the patient and evidence-based professional practice, driving positive outcomes.
Course outcomes: This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
CO # 1: Synthesize knowledge from sciences, humanities, and nursing in managing the needs of humans as consumers of healthcare in a patient-centered environment. (PO#1)
CO # 2: Integrate communication and relationship skills in teamwork and collaboration functioning effectively with health team members and consumers of care. (PO#3)
CO # 3: Utilize information technology to manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making with health team members and consumers of care. (PO# 8)
CO # 4 Integrate critical thinking, clinical reasoning skills, best current evidence, clinical expertise, and patient/family preferences/values in the implementation of the nursing process. (PO# 4)
CO # 5: Explore the impact of professional standards, legislative issues, ethical principles, and values on professional nursing, using data to monitor outcomes and improve quality and safety. (PO# 5, 6)

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the relationship between the category from the NCLEX-RN examination blueprint, the priority concept selected based on assessment performance, and professional practice. The priority concept (topic) selected is “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” from the NCLEX-RN examination blueprint. This paper will describe the importance of the priority concept to professional practice and the health status of a patient population, potential negative effects if the priority concept is unresolved, healthcare disparities, and inequalities. It will propose an evidence-based solution for the priority concept related to healthcare disparities, identify ethical and legal implications of addressing the priority concept, and discuss strategies for prevention of ethical and legal consequences. Additionally, it will identify interdisciplinary team members involved in the implementation of interventions for the priority concept and discuss the benefits of including them to promote evidence-based professional practice.
Category from the NCLEX-RN examination blueprint:
The priority concept (topic) selected for this paper is “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” from the NCLEX-RN examination blueprint. The category from the NCLEX-RN examination blueprint to which this priority concept belongs is “Assessment and Management of Clinical Conditions.” This category covers the assessment and management of conditions that affect a patient’s physiological and psychosocial well-being, as well as the prevention of complications.
Importance:
The priority concept of “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” is crucial to professional practice as it ensures that the patient receives safe, quality, and efficient care. A safe environment is critical for patient satisfaction and contributes to their overall health status. A safe and effective care environment is also essential for nursing professionals as it prevents workplace-related injuries, ensures professional accountability, and promotes positive patient outcomes.
If the priority concept of “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” is unresolved, it can negatively affect professional practice. Patient safety incidents can lead to harm, lawsuits, and negative publicity, which can damage the reputation of the healthcare facility and the nursing profession. Unresolved priority concepts can also affect patient populations negatively. Patients may receive substandard care, experience complications, and have longer hospital stays, which can lead to increased healthcare costs.
Healthcare Disparities, Inequalities, and Interventions:
The priority concept of “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” can negatively influence patient populations such as older adults, those with disabilities, and those from low-income communities. These populations are more vulnerable to falls, infections, and medication errors. Evidence-based interventions such as fall prevention programs, hand hygiene protocols, and medication reconciliation have been shown to reduce these risks.
Healthcare disparities and inequalities related to the priority concept of “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” exist across diverse populations. Low-income individuals and people of color may experience more adverse outcomes due to healthcare disparities and inequalities. Language barriers and cultural differences can lead to communication breakdowns and errors in care.
An evidence-based solution for the priority concept related to healthcare disparities is to implement cultural competence training for healthcare professionals. This training will enable healthcare providers to understand diverse cultural beliefs, values, and practices, leading to better communication and patient care.
Three evidence-based practice interventions for the priority concept of “Assurance of a Safe and Effective Care Environment” are:
Implementing a fall prevention program: This program involves identifying patients at risk of falls and implementing interventions such as bed alarms, hourly rounding, and bed rails to prevent falls.
Implementing hand hygiene protocols: This intervention involves promoting hand hygiene compliance among healthcare providers and implementing hand hygiene reminders such as posters, educational sessions, and feedback.
Medication reconciliation: This intervention involves comparing a patient’s current medication regimen to their medication orders and reconciling any discrepancies to prevent medication errors.
