As a nurse executive, the focus will be on implementing a shared governance model to improve the performance of the Saint Louis Medical Center (SLMC). The shared governance model refers to a working model of inclusive decision-making that organizes nurses to make decisions relating to quality improvement, clinical practice, and staff and professionals (Porter-O’Grady, 2017). The critical focus of implementing the shared governance approach is to improve patient experiences and enhance healthcare experiences to meet the emotional, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. Some of the core elements of the shared governance model are cultural changes via the transformational leadership approach and professional practice structure development to improve nursing outcomes. Implementing a shared governance approach will help enhance a supportive environment to achieve long-term governance and health care outcomes.
The Elements of Shared Governance Model
The shared governance approach will engage in a participatory decision-making approach to improve decision-making relating to clinical practice provisions, professional development, and quality improvement. These principles of shared governance perspectives will help to enhance education and participation in the non-hierarchical decision-making process (Reich et al., 2018). However, a hierarchical decision-making process will help to improve effective nursing decisions and supportive leadership processes. The nursing settings review is vital in ensuring the shared governance model will support the long-term nursing outcomes effectively.
The components of the shared governance model will comprise equality, empowerment, accountability, and partnership. The first element of equality will focus on improving shared efforts on services, patients, and services to improve safe and effective care services. Making changes to the culture will improve partnerships among health care professionals to achieve collaborative and quality care to improve patient results via shared vision (Reich et al., 2018). Implementing cultural changes is a critical part of the shared governance approach and enhances accountability and the long-term health care results. It is impossible to enhance the excellence of the health care organization without improving the leadership approach.
The second aspect of empowerment will give the nurses the authority and autonomy to make effective decisions about the overall nursing practice. According to Porter-O’Grady (2017), the integration of transformational leader culture and professional nurse structure and professionals’ development to improve governance and long-term performance of the professionals. The team members’ alignment at the different levels will develop a shared vision, which improves motivation and empowerment of professionals to improve accountability of the care. Moreover, accountability will enhance nurses’ responsibility and willingness to engage in ethical practices in their shared decision-making process. The organization should create dynamic representation from units to develop and improve the shared governance approach (Porter-O’Grady, 2017). The council and committee heads will report to improve the nursing practice and have a responsibility and right to address issues, bring issues for discussion, voting issues that impact nursing practice, and taking information to address these areas in various areas at SLMC.
The last element of the shared governance model is partnerships, which will recommend collaboration and teamwork among various stakeholders to improve patient experience and care. The design of implementing SLMC comprise of committees and councils to improve partnerships and voices. Every department at SLMC should be focused on developing nursing professional practice. Other professionals from other units might take part departments to improve nursing discussion (Porter-O’Grady, 2017). The nurse executives should develop other committees to improve professional development, patient safety, patient experience, nurse peer review, and prevention of infections. Every committee has improved representation at SLMC to achieve improved performance. Implementing the shared governance approach will lead to relationship-based care, which is patient-centered at SLMC.
The role of the nurse executives in implementing the shared governance model is to provide leadership in the health care system to help design and implement innovative adjustments to the health care policy. The nurse executives will also be responsible for monitoring the health policy regulations and guidelines to improve supportive patient care and nursing practice quality (Porter-O’Grady, 2017). The nurse executive should also provide consistent and timely responses to the team members to enhance organizational changes. Quality leadership will help bring about positive performance from other staff in the organization, thus promoting effective implementation of the shared governance system.
Impact of Shared Governance Model
The integration of the shared governance model has a good potential and capacity to improve the nursing practice. Adopting a leadership style is useful to improve nursing by establishing a working climate conducive to and supportive to the nursing professionals. The nurse executives will become more accountable, equitable, and more empowered. According to Boswell et al. (2017), the nurses’ empowerment and improves autonomy improve the nurses’ positive experience to achieve positive professional practice, patient satisfaction, and improving relationships between the health care staff. The transformational leadership model implements shared governance to empower nurses and encourage the practice by having a common vision. The nurses’ empowering will improve changes, give the nurses a good sense of satisfaction, and support nurse engagement. A health care organization will provide a high level of engagement, and nurse satisfaction will reduce turnover and ensure they are fully motivated. According to Boswell et al. (2017), allowing the nurses to oversee practice will help promote changes and improve patient care quality and support the achievement of desired outcomes. The high level of satisfaction will lead to improved satisfaction. The impact of the shared governance approach will improve the quality of care outcomes.
To sum up, the nurse executive is critical in Helping the SLMC to improve the implementation of shared governance organizational approach. The shared governance approach will help the nurse executives improve shared decision making and values to improve quality health care nursing and achieve positive results. The critical components of the shared governance model for SLMC will include promoting equality, empowering the nurses, promoting accountability, and partnership. These principles of the shared governance model will help enhance quality nursing services and respect for the nurses’ recommendations. Therefore, the design of shared governance is critical to improving the achievement of the healthcare facility’s organizational and professional targets.
