DESCRIPTION:
Essay Assignment Start by reading the “Guidelines for Humanities Essays.” Then use appropriate planning and invention strategies to develop a 4-6-page essay on either Margaret Edson’s Wit or Alice Munro’s “The Bear Came over the Mountain.” The prompts below should help you to develop a focus and thesis. They are meant to get you thinking; your essay may not respond directly to a particular prompt. The essay will go through a formal process of drafting and revision. A first, reader-friendly draft will be due for peer review on Tuesday, February 6, and a revised draft should be submitted to Blackboard turnitin by Friday, February 9 at midnight. I will respond to this draft with comments. A final revision will be due in turnitin.com on Saturday, February 17. You should consult and plan to refer (as appropriate) to the initial journal articles we read about the medical humanities as well as “The Wit Educational Initiative” and Martha Nussbaum’s essay “The Narrative Imagination,” These will be essential in establishing your credibility and in grounding your discussion. Remember that you’ll be thinking about the relevance of the work to the values of the Medical/Healthcare Humanities. You may make references to the HBO film version of Wit; however, if you choose to write about Wit, your discussion should be grounded in the language and text of the published play. Please remember that you are writing about the value of the play or story, not about the healthcare profession, where none of us has enough expertise or direct experience to make general claims. At this point your expertise is in the readings, so your thesis will grow out of a careful analysis of the work you’re focusing on. 1. We’ve read several articles that support the use of literature in medical education. They argue that literature and the arts are effective vehicles for developing humanism. How do they lead to a more humanistic orientation? Relying on a close examination of the characters as well as their relationships and healthcare experiences, write an essay that shows how Margaret Edson’s Wit or Alice Munro’s “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” would be of value in a Healthcare or Medical Humanities curriculum. 2. Wit is set in a “University Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center.” Its main character is a literary scholar who specializes in the work of John Donne. While cancer research and Donne’s Holy Sonnets belong to different eras and disciples, they are connected in the play through Vivian Bearing’s illness, treatment, and life story. Write an essay that explains what can be learned from Vivian Bearing’s cancer story, arguing for the use of the play in a Healthcare Humanities course? 3. Our medical humanities readings discussed the importance of interpersonal communication, compassion, and empathy in patient care. The authors emphasized the value of both affective experience and cognitive learning in the development of clinical skills. The Wit Educational Initiative and Martha Nussbaum’s essay “The Narrative Imagination” explicitly identify the emotional and cathartic features of theater (and film) as educational tools. Write an essay on how Wit (text and film) or “The Bear Came over the Mountain” can contribute to health care education by engaging our emotional responses. Important Notice: I have attached my essay file, please see it in additional files. In that file, It includes my professor’s comments, please rewrite my essay base on what my professor commented and the structures of essay above.
