Question 1a:
Title: The Magic Paintbrush (also known as The Magic Brush or The Enchanted Paintbrush)
Culture of Origin: Chinese
Summary: The Magic Paintbrush is a story about a poor orphan boy named Ma Liang who is given a magical paintbrush by a mysterious old man. Whatever Ma Liang paints with the brush becomes real, and he uses this power to help those in need. However, the greedy emperor wants to use the paintbrush for his own selfish purposes, and when Ma Liang refuses to give it to him, the emperor sends his soldiers to capture him. With the help of the paintbrush, Ma Liang manages to escape and eventually becomes a famous artist. The story highlights the themes of generosity, kindness, courage, and standing up against injustice.
To use this story as a prompt to engage the group to start their own personal storytelling journey, the facilitator could begin by sharing the story with the group and inviting them to reflect on the themes and messages they see in the story. The facilitator could then ask the group to share personal experiences or anecdotes related to the themes in the story, such as times when they have shown kindness or stood up for what is right. The group could also be encouraged to create their own “magic paintbrush” by writing or drawing something they wish to bring into their lives.
Question 1b:
Structure/Outline for the Storytelling Circle:
Introduction (10 mins)
The facilitator welcomes the group and sets the stage for the storytelling circle. The facilitator explains the purpose of the circle, the activities involved, and the importance of creating a safe and respectful space for sharing.
Storytelling (30 mins)
The facilitator shares The Magic Paintbrush story and invites the group to reflect on the themes and messages in the story. The group is then invited to share personal experiences or anecdotes related to the themes in the story.
Visual Art (20 mins)
The group is provided with art materials such as paper, paints, and brushes. They are asked to create their own “magic paintbrush” by drawing or painting something they wish to bring into their lives. The group is encouraged to share their artwork and explain what it represents to them.
Creative Writing (20 mins)
The group is given writing prompts related to the themes in The Magic Paintbrush story, such as “Describe a time when you showed kindness to someone” or “Write about a time when you stood up for what is right.” The group is invited to share their writing with the group if they feel comfortable doing so.
Closing (10 mins)
The facilitator summarizes the themes and messages that emerged during the storytelling circle and thanks the group for their participation. The group is reminded of the importance of self-expression and encouraged to continue their personal storytelling journey.
Aims and purpose: The aim of this storytelling circle is to provide a safe and supportive space for participants to share personal stories related to the themes in The Magic Paintbrush story. The purpose is to promote self-expression, connection, and understanding among the group members.
Instructions for participants: Participants are invited to listen actively to each other’s stories, to respect each other’s confidentiality and privacy, and to share their own stories if they feel comfortable doing so.
