The film begins as Jean Valjean, a former convict on parole, goes into the home of Bishop Myriel. Jean asks for meals and shelter, and Myriel accepts. As midnight strikes, Valjean steals Myriel’s silverware, and escapes. The following day, he’s arrested and introduced again to Bishop Myriel. When Myriel was requested if Valjean stole the silverware, Myriel tells the police that he didn’t steal it. The truth is, he even provided Valjean the costly candlesticks. Bishop Myriel then reminds Jean Valjean of his promise that he’ll turn out to be a modified man.
