Supply Chain Sustainability, Risk and Resilience Management
Supply chain sustainability refers to the practices and processes involved in managing the environmental, social, and economic impacts of a company’s supply chain. This includes considering the environmental footprint of the materials and products being sourced, the labor practices and working conditions of suppliers, and the overall economic impact of the supply chain on local communities.

Risk management in the supply chain refers to the processes and practices a company uses to identify and mitigate potential risks to the supply chain. These risks can include financial risks, such as supplier bankruptcy or price fluctuations, as well as operational risks, such as natural disasters or transportation disruptions.

Resilience in the supply chain refers to the ability of a supply chain to recover from disruptions or shocks, such as natural disasters or pandemics. This includes having contingency plans in place and developing diversified sourcing strategies to reduce reliance on a single supplier or geographic region.

Effective supply chain sustainability, risk and resilience management can help a company minimize negative impacts on the environment and local communities, and protect against potential disruptions to its operations. This can help a company maintain its reputation and long-term sustainability, as well as minimize financial losses.

There are a number of tools and approaches that can be used to manage supply chain sustainability, risk and resilience, including supply chain mapping, life cycle assessment, sustainability reporting, and sustainability certification programs. By implementing these tools and approaches, a company can better understand and address the impacts of its supply chain, and work towards a more sustainable and resilient future.

Assessment
The overall assessment of the module has two components – Component 1 and Component 2.
Component 1 – Group poster presentation (20%)
Instructions on Assessment
Each Group of students is to produce and present a poster based on a brand, industry sector, company
or product of choice. Based on a desktop literature search, students should source and cite information
pertinent to their chosen brand, industry sector, company or product and identify relevant challenges
and/or opportunities that may exist for managing sustainability and/or risk resilience in an international
supply chain context. For instance, how would a sustainable supply chain management approach
improve/enhance responsible business management in supply chains? What are the critical issues of
concern? Why?
Group Allocation
At the outset of the course, groups of 4 to 6 students will be formed. These groups will work together
on seminar tasks related to Sustainable Supply Chain Management and Risk-Resilience with a view to
producing work for the first component of the module’s assessment, a Group Poster Presentation.
Group Poster Presentation
• For the presentation, each group of students should be able to critically discuss an appropriate,
relevant issue related to sustainable supply chain management and/or supply chain risk-resilience.

• Each group will need to demonstrate the level of sustainable supply chain/risk-resilience
improvement opportunities, barriers and/or potential(s) relevant to the topic of choice.
• All sources of information should be cited using APA 6edition style.
• Online Group Presentation in Week 10.
• Each group will be assessed by a member of the teaching team who will ask you to submit an
electronic copy of your Poster Presentation via Turnitin by the submission deadline 12 Noon
on [TBC].
Format, Size and Submission
• Posters should be formatted so that they can printed in A2 size in either Portrait or Landscape
formats.
• An electronic copy of your Group poster should be submitted via Turnitin (Component 1) by
every individual group member along with a separate word or pdf document with your full
reference list and any additional supplementary information to support your Poster.
Poster Content
• The poster should illustrate the practical aspects of Sustainable Supply Chain Management and/or
Supply Chain Risk-Resilience Management pertinent to the choice of industry sector/product/brand.
Things to consider when designing, developing and producing your poster:
o What are the potential hazards/risks that could be overcome in adopting a Supply Chain
Risk-Resilience Management and/or a Sustainable Supply Chain Management approach?
o What benefits can be achieved in adopting a supply chain risk-resilience management
approach in contemporary business?
o Choose a relevant contemporary theme relevant to the topic of choice (e.g. waste,
climate change policy, emissions, environmental regulation, social justice, ethics,
globalised versus localised chains etc.).
o Consider how a purely focused ‘Business as Usual’ (BAU) approach would compare
against a ‘Triple Bottom Line’ (TBL) approach in the context of sustainable supply
chain/supply chain risk-resilience management.

Assignment Brief Snapshot
Students are expected to produce a report with 2 separate parts, addressing Task 1 & Task 2 by
assuming the position of an International Sustainability and Risk, Supply Chain Professional. Each
Task must be presented under a separate heading, but in one single academic report. This report
includes a front page and an Executive Summary at the beginning.
Students are required to complete both Parts, as each has a separate word count and marking share.
The front page of the report must include your Student ID number, Programme name, Module title,
Module code, Module Tutor, and the word count per task.
NB: Academic citations are NOT included in the word count.

Executive Summary: 10% Structure/presentation/referencing style: 10%
Assignment Brief in Detail – Component 2 (80%)
You are an International Sustainable Supply Chain Risk Management Professional, and you are
tasked with providing a critically evidenced report with 2 parts, addressing 2 separate tasks. This
report should present through a critical analysis, a set of generated recommendations for
organizational practice and policy formation (with a view to generate ‘transformational’
improvements for social, environmental, and economic sustainability and risk-resilience in a Global
Supply Chain context).
Part 1 (Task 1) should focus on Supply Chain Risk and Resilience Management. Part 2 (Task 2) will
focus on Sustainable Supply Chain Management.
To address each Task, you will need to choose an appropriate sector to set your report against. This
can be public, private and/or third sector area/organisation/agency(ies). You MUST show the
relevance/rationale of your choice of sector/area/organisation/agency(ies).
You must also choose to focus on a contemporary supply chain issue in the context of your chosen
sector and demonstrate the rationale for your choice by outlining its relevance supported with
research-informed evidence for your report.
• Examples of sectors include but are not limited to: Agri-Food and Farming, Alternative Food
Growers and Producers, Food Manufacturing, Food Retail, Pharmaceuticals, Energy, Education,
Finance, Artificial Intelligence, Military, Humanitarian Agencies, Public Health, Fast-Fashion,
Logistics, etc.
• Examples of contemporary issues include, Covid-19, Climate Change, Supply Chain Ethics,
Disaster, Risk and Hazard Management, Reshoring, Modern Day Slavery.
• Examples of some tools/approaches to manage sustainability, risk and resilience include but are
not limited to: Carbon Footprinting, Strategic Environmental Assessment, Vested Sourcing, Life

Cycle Assessment, Remanufacturing, Closed Loop Supply Chain, etc. Your report should extend to
a discussion of the potential benefits/disadvantages of managing sustainability and risk-resilience
in a supply chain context detailing any relevant examples and/or issues pertinent to the sector and
issue(s) of choice.
Please remember to cite from appropriate academic scholarly sources and critically discuss your
chosen tool(s)/approach(es) and their strategic relevance in terms of benefits as well as limitations.
To summarise:
The assignment will need to focus on two separate Tasks divided into 2 parts. These include:
1. Task 1: Supply Chain Risk and Resilience Management: 1500 words on
sector and contemporary issue of choice
2. Task 2: Sustainable Supply Chain Management: 1500 words on sector and contemporary
issue of choice
The report must also include a 500 word Executive Summary (included in the total word count) which
should be located after the title page of the report.
1. A comprehensive reference list is required.
2. You should synthesise company data, governmental and non-governmental reports with
academic literature and other contemporary sources.
3. This assignment is an individual academic report, which needs to be prepared by each
individual student and be submitted before 12:00 pm on the deadline date.
More guidance and information on the Written Assignment Report
The drivers of economic, environmental, and social (EES) aspects commonly referred to as ‘the triple
bottom line’ (TBL) define the parameters of sustainable supply chains. They are classically recognised
as being influenced and driven by the following factors: legislation, finance, environmental impacts,
and internal / external business processes and, relationships along the length of the supply chain
network. It is essential for supply chain organisations to consider the impacts of their chains,
extending beyond supplier bases and customers at the point of consumption, to recognise the
importance of product life cycle and end of life management / recovery.
These factors can be further categorised in terms of:
• Sector/Organisation competencies/characterisation of the structure of supply chains in a
particular sector and what strategic supply chain risk & resilience management can bring to
make chains leaner, agile, more cohesive, risk-resilient, and robust.
• Opportunities for innovation, development of products, improvement of organisational
structures, corporate strategies and supply chain structures / common measures adopted
and/or suggested to enhance future optimisation and realise sustainability targets in advance
of possible mandatory legislation or ‘future proofing’.
Assessment Brief – Level 7 Postgraduate
• Governance in relation to the role of legislature compliance and the measurement tools,
techniques, and approaches / management / reduction / reporting of operational impacts
(for example, LCA) upon the environment and associated stakeholders in shaping supply
chain governance approaches. How this contributes to the strategic understanding and
setting of sustainability and risk resilience management initiatives/targets.
• The report for this assignment should take the above into account and consider this module’s
lecture series. It may consider the more efficient use of existing systems within organisations
as well as the broader themes of collaboration, innovation, and engagement in the context of
supply chain management, risk resilience and sustainability. Discussion may also include
matters related to contemporary risk and sustainability measures, how such measures can
improve risk resilience and enhance sustainability in relation to turnover, operational
efficiencies, environmental impact, and stakeholder relationships.
10% of the marks are assigned to the Executive Summary (Max 500 words). This is about an overall
understanding about the two Tasks. The integration of these two Tasks in the summary is important.
You are required to have a very good understanding of both tasks to link them together in your
summary.
Please, make sure you provide the 2 parts (Task 1 & Task 2) separately under a specific heading and
explain the issues by using underpinning academic theories and examples for each of these parts. The
Executive Summary will be a summary of your understanding covering both Tasks 1 & 2. You are
expected to use all relevant material from lectures, seminars and use an appropriate number of
academic resources including textbooks from the recommended reading list and peer reviewed
academic journal papers from NORA and other data bases such as “Emerald”.
In addressing and critically analysing the case, you will need to consider Sustainable Supply Chain and
Risk-Resilience Management tools, standards, and approaches such as (but not limited to):
• Carbon Footprinting
• Life Cycle Analysis
• Disaster, Risk, Resilience & Hazard Management
• Capacity and demand management
• Reverse Manufacturing
• Circular Economy
• Scenario Planning
• Stakeholder Analysis
• Performance measurement
• Location decision making and management
• Strategic Environmental Assessment
• Ecosystem Services
• Environmental Impact Assessment
Your assignment will be 3500 words-long report (plus or minus 10%). The word count per section is
as follows:
• Executive Summary 500 words
• Remainder of report 3,000 words
Assessment Brief – Level 7 Postgraduate
You may also include an appendix/appendices for relevant supporting material but main arguments
must be included in the body of the report. Your report must follow a standard report structure. For
more details of report writing, you can refer to:
http://elp.northumbria.ac.uk/bbcswebdav/library/Library%20Content/webfiles/learningobjects/rlo/
Report%20writing/index.htm
To gain a basic pass, your analysis will be supported by evidence from at least 30 good quality, peer
reviewed journals. You may also use text-books and journal sources available on the Internet as well
as in the university library but you must NOT use other material from the Internet.
Referencing your work
The APA 6 method of referencing uses the author’s name and the date of the publication. In-text
citations give brief details of the work you are referring to in your text. References are listed at the end
of the text in alphabetical order by the author’s name. The general format of an electronic journal
reference in the APA style is shown below:
Coutu, D. (2009). Why Teams Don’t Work. Harvard Business Review, 87(5), 98-105. Retrieved 29th April
2012 from EBSCO http://searchebscohost.com
Author/s name and initials are listed first, followed by year of publication in brackets. Then there is
the title of article and the journal where the article appears, which is in italics. Then state the volume
and issue number (in brackets) along with the pages where article can be located. Finally add the date
the article was retrieved and then the name of the database, followed by the web address. Wherever
possible use the homepage URL rather than the full and extended web address.

Late submission of work
Where coursework is submitted without approval, after the published hand-in deadline, the
following penalties will apply.
For coursework submitted up to 1 working day (24 hours) after the published hand-in deadline
without approval, 10% of the total marks available for the assessment (i.e.100%) shall be deducted
from the assessment mark.
Assessment Brief – Level 7 Postgraduate
For clarity: a late piece of work that would have scored 65%, 55% or 45% had it been handed in on
time will be awarded 55%, 45% or 35% respectively as 10% of the total available marks will have been
deducted.
The Penalty does not apply to Pass/Fail Modules, i.e. there will be no penalty for late submission if
assessments on Pass/Fail are submitted up to 1 working day (24 hours) after the published hand-in
deadline.
Coursework submitted more than 1 working day (24 hours) after the published hand-in deadline
without approval will be regarded as not having been completed. A mark of zero will be awarded for
the assessment and the module will be failed, irrespective of the overall module mark.
For clarity: if the original hand-in time on working day A, is 12noon the 24 hour late submission
allowance will end at 12noon on working day B.
These provisions apply to all assessments, including those assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.
Word limits and penalties
If the assignment is within +10% of the stated word limit no penalty will apply.
The word count is to be declared on the front page of your assignment and the assignment cover sheet. The
word count does not include:
• Title and
Contents page • Reference list • Appendices
• Appropriate tables,
figures and
• Glossary • Bibliography illustrations
• Quotes from
interviews and
focus groups.
Please note, in text citations [e.g. (Smith, 2011)] and direct secondary quotations [e.g. “dib-dab nonsense
analysis” (Smith, 2011 p.123)] are INCLUDED in the word count.
If this word count is falsified, students are reminded that under ASSESSMENT REGULATION FOR TAUGHT
AWARDS page 30 Section 3.4 this will be regarded as academic misconduct.
If the word limit of the full assignment exceeds the +10% limit, 10% of the mark provisionally awarded to the
assignment will be deducted. For example: if the assignment is worth 70 marks but is above the word limit by
more than 10%, a penalty of 7 marks will be imposed, giving a final mark of 63.
Students must retain an electronic copy of this assignment (including ALL appendices) and it must be made
available within 24hours of them requesting it be submitted.
Academic Misconduct
The Assessment Regulations for Northumbria Awards (ASSESSMENT REGULATION FOR TAUGHT AWARDS)
