“Argumentative Essay on benefit of technology in the contemprrary world and how would we solve the issues with cyberbullying.
Technology helps define how individuals within the socialization process communicate, learn, think. It has become an important and significant disruptor in most of the world’s societies working effectively to build capacity and provide a more inclusive society, economically, culturally, socially, and politically. The role of technology is also constantly expanding, presenting authorities with new challenges and avenues to approach social problems that continually manifest within society. Like any other development, technological innovation presents new avenues and outlook on life that positively or negatively affect change. This is because there is a greater inter-dependency that manifests between people and technology in all aspects of life. This argumentative essay argues that technology has been a great disruptor and a force of good by all means. Still, societal corruption risks making technology a huge impediment for social growth and development. To prevent this, it is important to maintain a nonbiased oversight authority that critically provides education on the potential dangers of technological corruption and actively addresses its negative use.
Technological innovation spans a wide variety of sectors in the modern era. Technology has become part of man, working to create employment, sustain life, predict future outcomes, all of which work to make the human race better off. Standard commercial technology has grown in leaps and bounds to become an integral tool for human interaction and development. Fruchterman (2004) identifies that modern telecommunication and the development of transport networks have become essential and significant in allowing societies worldwide to meet their social, economic, and cultural needs. As the world and its people are right now, making technology, our objective reality could not function without it. Social media sites have played a key role in this development, opening the world and its various communities to socialization, commercial accessibility, and infecting various sectors with ideologies and perspectives that have been critical in addressing important social needs.
The technology could be described in the long term as a force for good. But this is dependent on how it is applied to change and improve people’s lives. As a tool, it can be used to either improve or harm its users. Major emphasis is placed on its users’ ability to adequately understand its impact and apply it for their benefit (Galbreath, 2015). Technology has become an important asset in our world and affects how society interacts with the world and others. Some of the more observable values that technology has brought humanity include ease of movement of goods and people, better communication, greater mobility, the convergence of innovative ideas for social development, better learning techniques, improved financial management tools, among others. It is important to recognize, in the same instance, that individual members of the society can use the tools at their disposal to develop scientific and technological advances for the cause of harm (Galbreath, 2015). Social media is one impactful tool whose growth and impact pace continues to be dynamic in the immediate short term period.
Digital technology development has only been around for less than half a century. While it has been very fruitful in bringing forth meaningful social change, the jury is out on the impacts it seeks to deliver to the world in the distant future. In the short term period, it has been very problematic and helpful at the same time. It has opened the world and its people to social inclusivity and better communication in areas such as healthcare and education. Similarly, it has been critical in corrupting well-established policies in governance, especially in burgeoning economies. This has been done by empowering alternative unpleasant ideologies and policies. Unlike other technological tools, such as guns, for example, which have been around for centuries, as such has numerous policies and control on their use, social media remains to have a larger gray area in its application. Bullying, as a negative trend, was bolstered by social media growth and development. Hyper-connectivity brought about by social media has been critical in increasing communication (Lynch, 2017). It has also made more people more accessible to various critics of their personal preferences and ideologies. Cyberbullying has been very problematic and distressing. It provides deviants a channel to harass and undermine the well-being of teenagers’ emotional, physical, and mental predisposition. This is a negative aspect that social media continues to promote, and limited oversight into the use of social media propagates its use.
To better deal with cyberbullying, more research into the impacts of social media need to be established. Empirical research indicates that to understand cyberbullying, establishing the parameters in which it is propagated and the reasons behind it are critical in minimizing its impact and targeting victims for restitution and protection (Garaigordobil and Martínez-Valderrey, 2018). As a technological tool, social media could be used to prevent cyberbullying by setting up guidelines and increasing the monitoring of potential victims and offenders. Garaigordobil and Martínez-Valderrey (2018) identify that social media companies could invest more in fostering social and emotional factors as factors that work to inhibit violence. This could be done through greater transparency, cooperation with authorities, and the institution of empathy and high moral values as a precursor to propagate social media usage.
Technology remains to develop and gain dynamism. It affects how society relates to its ecosystem and with each other. It is still in its infancy. It becomes very hard to predict the direction it is likely to take in the long term. Creating clear guidelines on its application will help make it a better tool for the goof of humanity.
