Whichever Portfolio Project option you choose, this week submit your Portfolio Project topic for approval. Explain why this topic is important for you to research and analyze in 1-2 paragraphs. Include a brief overview of the topic and provide some detail as to what you will explore. (100 words)
You will be required to glean appropriate sources (to include academic, professional, and peer-reviewed journal articles). This week, submit 3 briefly annotated sources (100 words each) relevant to your topic. This annotated bibliography will be written in APA format. Submit your topic and bibliography as an assignment this week. (300 words)
I selected Option #1: The Ethics of Policy
Choose a criminal justice organization or specific agency for which you aspire to work (probation/parole, police agency, corrections, courts, etc.). please focus of juvenile justice system, emphasizing Juvenile Crime, Juvenile Justice.
Use hunt library/internet to locate credible sources (preferably peer-reviewed) to conduct research on your chosen sector. Based on your research, provide an analysis of at least one current ethical challenge or dilemma in that sector, including why this dilemma/challenge is occurring. The dilemma I selected is {a vast proportion of juveniles are being tried and prosecuted as adults}- 0.5 pages
Then, identify a policy that currently exists to address this dilemma. Based on your research, analyze the policy according to the ethical frameworks of deontology, utilitarianism and virtue. Describe the ethical dilemmas presented by the topic and the merits of that policy as it pertains to all stakeholders impacted (i.e., the agency, public safety, the offender, etc.). What are the social, economic, or political influences on this topic? (1.5 pages)
The topic of the ethics of policy in the juvenile justice system is important because it impacts the lives of young people who have not yet reached adulthood. Juveniles are being tried and prosecuted as adults at an alarming rate, and this trend has led to a number of ethical dilemmas. It is important to examine these ethical issues and the policies that have been developed to address them, to ensure that the treatment of juveniles in the criminal justice system is fair, just, and in line with ethical principles.
