Technology has so far had a great impact on the human kind d other factors in the history of the world. Just as other sectors that have since encountered the impacts of technology, the learning sector is one of those sectors that have experienced significant sift through technological means. This piece discusses some of the aspects that technology in learning with the focus being on the younger generations.
The use of technology by kids in today learning is different from how the older generation applied technology in learning. The differences of technology in learning between the two generations are aligned with the development of new learning technologies that have recently developed with comparison those that the older generation had access to (LaBree, 2016). One of the differences between technological learning for kids to today versus the older generation is the classroom setting. The older classrooms setting were equipped with whiteboards and mostly had a single computer. The older schools mostly contained a single computer lap that was shared by the enter school. However, the kids of today enjoy access to classrooms that are filed with smartboards, digital whiteboards, and different interactive screens. The internet is connected to every classroom which allows students to have their own laptops, tablets, and smartphones to access more online classroom information.
The older generation online learning was usually referred to the hour per week in the computer lab as the students had only one opportunity per week to get access to the computer lab to access online learning materials. However, today kids have more access to online learning due to blended learning, virtual classes, and other technological innovation means that has enabled online learning more common, rigorous, and effective for each kid. More technological innovative has changed the way kids interact in the classroom compared to then (LaBree, 2016). Kids today can pass notes to each other through smartphones, tablets, or laptops and even have a conversation while the class session in on, the older generation did not have this opportunity as they used to pass notes. The older generation online material sharing was difficult as they had less time to access the computer compared to today’s kids that have full access to computerized gadgets that help them share information with other students in other schools easily.
There are several positive and negative aspects that exist in how technology affects the younger generation’s learning. The positive aspects of how technology affects the younger generation learning include improved student-teacher interaction. Through technology, the younger generation has a more teacher-student interaction through the connections that technology has availed. Teachers remain in conduct with their students through e-mails and other services such as the Dropbox that allows the teacher to follow-up the student learning process by sharing and uploading learning content (Rihanna, 2017). The sharing and uploading features are able to serve a larger number of students once enhancing the teacher ability to continue to evaluate the students’ process hence improving the students’ learning progress. Technology has also enabled students to enhance their learning process through access to a huge information background. The students only need to enter specific information in the Web search engines to get access to millions of information concerning the topic. The technology has also enabled the development of varies academic informative websites and web directories that provide information on specific topics which helps the students to get access to all additional information they need to expand their classroom knowledge.
The younger generation nowadays enjoys the absence of geographical and political boundaries in social networking which has enhanced their learning process. The technology has enabled the students to have access to the virtual world where they can share their opinion, thoughts and communicate with other students in different environments across the globe. The younger generation through technology has the opportunity to access more specific information concerning a particular distance location by interacting with other students in that location (McCoy, 2019). The effect of technology to the students in concern of social networking is that it has enabled the learning process to become much easier and more accessible since the information needed can be obtained through social networking with other students across the world. The other positive impact of technology in learning to the younger generation is the availability of educational games and simulations. The students in younger grades are exposed to computers through educational games and simulations which help them learn the basics of spelling and counting in a more fun way that enhances the students’ interests in the learning process. Simulations such as Web-based and learning enhances the students understanding of math and science concepts. Therefore, technology in the learning process of younger generation has improved the students’ ability to access more information, take much interests in the subjects and topics being presented, and encouraged the students to participate in other aspects in the community that do not involve the educational programs such as community services and also has enhanced the students innovative ability.
However, there are several negative aspects of how technology affects the younger generation’s learning process. The major negative impact of technology in the learning process of the younger generation is the technology OverloadLike in all things; this means that the current technology is currently being overused in today classroom causing negative effects to the students learning the process. Some of the negative effects that come with technology overuse in class include students not concentrating during the learning sessions as they are busy texting or using the internet for either school-related or for insignificant use (Nuttall, 2019). The overuse of the internet can also be ascertained through increased plagiarism in students’ assignment and the assignment signifies lack of critical and creative thinking capacity. The other negative impact of technology on the younger generation’s learning is time loss. In today’s learning process, the teacher should be able to maximize the time provided to deliver educational content to the students. However, when the technical difficulties occur during the lesson, the learning loss occurs which negatively affects the students learning the process. Lastly, the other serious negative impact of technology is a distraction in the classroom. The students are easily distracted with the opportunity to access social network sites and games during the learning secessions which divvied the student planned learning activities. The technological destruction affects the students overall progress of the learning process and hence their ability to successes or attain the standard learning outcome.
The social aspects of technology for learning for younger generations incorporate the students’ ability to incorporate technology in their educational and social interaction with other students, teachers, and society. The social aspect of technology for younger generations in the learning process has both positive and negative impacts. The negative impacts that are posed by the social aspect of technology include students developing an addiction to social networking. The charts rooms that social technology provides enable students to interact with their fellows across the globe, however, the chartrooms end up being addictive as students spend a lot of their time there and even getting involved in non-educative activities affecting their learning process. The other negative impact of social technology in learning for the younger generation is that the students’ attention can be divvied to the gaming and other social development occurring on the internet (Human Kinetics, 2019). The younger generation overuse of gaming can result in students engaging in activities that simulate those in the games. These activities can be violent in nature or even worse than what is provided in the game. Some programs in media such as television can change the way younger generations view and regard social skills and social lives and even have serious effects on the students’ social interactive skills since they only sit and digest what is being presented rather than practicing how it is presented.
However, there are positive impacts of the social aspect of technology for learning for the younger generations. Some of these positive impacts are helping the student to fit in the interactive participation of the society. Students are able to get access to social platforms such as Facebook and Tweeter that enable them to interact with other members of the society, learn from their viewpoint about different topics, and also present their point of argument concerning the topics in discussion. The students also develop their creative and critical thinking capacity together with their information presentation as they interact with other students, teachers, and the society across the social technology platforms. Social learning also enables students to share, collaborate, ask questions, and obtain more knowledge from their peers; this helps in building trust among them and promotes open communication and sociability.
Technology is still growing with more innovative means being developed on how learning can be conducted. There are several ways in how technology will affect the learning process of future generations. Some of these include the availability of access to education for a considerably bigger number of global populations to quality education. The internet will enable more coverage of basic and advanced topics for most of the younger generations across the globe (Heick, 2015). The incorporation of cloud-based education in the future will enhance the ability of students’ aggregation in metrics, more efficient data sharing, and visual assessment. The other impact that technology would have on the learning process in future is an improvement of social learning experiences through digital media dialogue learning that would enhance the students’ ability to respond and interact with their peers, mentors, and families through a socially-embraced collaborative pattern.
However, there are negative effects that technology would have on younger generation learning. One of the main future negative effects of technology on the student learning process is changing learning priorities. Students in the future would not be concerned with details due to the universal availability of the internet (Dennis, 2019). The internet will make the students prioritize where the information can be found rather than what is the information all about. The students would face a hard time to concentrate in classroom sessions due to constant stimulations provide by the internet such as email, text messages, and video games. The overall results of the student in the future would be lack of creative and critical thinking which would affect their lives outside the classroom.
In conclusion, technology incorporation in the young generation learning process can be considered to provide more advantages than disadvantages in the student learning development process. The technologies involved in the students learning should, therefore, be well evaluated and used in the required way to enhance its effectiveness and improvement of students’ educational and social learning.
