2. Instructions
The following is the case study you will use in answering the exam questions.
• Social workers are sometimes faced with parents who are desperate to produce changes in their children. Sometimes these changes are simply impossible, as when the parents of a child born with a profoundly life-limiting genetic or chromosomal disorder wish their child could be cured. Sometimes the changes can be achieved, but with work, as when the parents of a child with an intellectual disability want to help their child live as independently as possible. Other times, parents may want to try an intervention that is questionable—one that perhaps has never been shown to help or may even do harm. So-called conversion therapy, which proponents claim can convert people who are gay or lesbian into heterosexuals, is one such intervention.
QUESTION 1
1. After reading the discussions on gender socialization, gender and coping and gender and aggression, assume the role of a professional trainer for child welfare workers. You are presenting on the intersection between gender roles and aggression in teen boys. Discuss what points you would highlight that reinforce aggression in boys and also discuss what prevention strategies can be used to challenge the gender differentiation of young boys and girls.
QUESTION 2
1. Suppose the parents demand that you refer them to a therapist who will provide conversion therapy. What are the ethical arguments against such a referral? What are the ethical arguments in favor of such a referral? What will you do?
