Seminar 1The seminar explores the historical development of modern capitalism with a focus on processes of commodification and financialization. In particular, we will look at the degree to which markets are a suitable means for societal coordination.
All seminar participants are required to prepare for the seminar by reading Block & Somers (2014), Butler(2011), Kuttner (2014), and Satz (2010 Presenting Team will need to meet before the seminar to prepare your 15-minute presentation. You are required to outline the main ideas in Block & Somers (2014), Kuttner(2014), and Satz (2010). You might consider the following questions:
• What is commodification?
• How did commodification shape the development of western societies?
• What are noxious markets?-What is the extent to which businesses participate in (or even create) (noxious) markets?
• What might be the implications of commodification for managers?
The Presenting Team will summarize their arguments in a short paper (2000 words +/-10%). This short paper should be submitted to the seminar tutor by email and submitted on Athena24 hours prior to your seminar.
