Guidelines: Title your essay “Civil Liberty Crisis” (without quotation marks) Be sure to follow all formatting guidelines provided in the syllabus. Your final work product must have a cover page with a word count, an essay that is 4-6 pages in length and works cited page. The minimum writing requirement expectation is two full pages in your own words (excluding citations). If the minimum expectations are not met, the assignment will be marked incomplete. Be sure to provide a proper citation in MLA format for all works consulted on separate works cited page. A minimum of three scholarly sources must be cited in the essay. Non-scholarly sources can be cited, but they will not count toward the three scholarly source requirement. Essay questions (all of these must be addressed at some point in the essay): 1. Identify the current list of “issues” listed on the ACLU’s website: http://www.aclu.org 2. Pick a category and explain why it was chosen. Remember to not use the first person in this part of the essay. 3. Conduct additional research using scholarly sources. Identify the Constitutional issue(s) associated with the topic and see if there have been any related court cases in the past 20 years. Briefly discuss the impact that these may have on the current effort. 4. What underlying social, economic, political and/or psychological factors help us understand why this issue has persisted in American society? 5. What are interest groups working for and against the issue? What is/are their position(s) on the issue? What successes or failures have they had? 6. What are some of the possible governmental solutions being discussed to address this issue? What solutions have been attempted? To what extent have they been successful/unsuccessful and why? 7. What changes do you think are likely to occur in the next five years as it pertains to this issue?
