Case Study: Part 1.
Although we won’t actually cover the details of evidence collection and the rationale for collecting particular samples from a crime scene, just bear in mind that good common sense is one of the best virtues of a forensic scientist. From the picture series and the accompanying narrative, decide which evidence you would test for the presence of drug substances, and the preliminary tests you would conduct and your rationale for doing so.

Please make sure to give yourself some extra time to do this assignment as it is worth 40 points. For this assignment to make it easier for me to grade I would like you all to submit it through a table format. This can be done by creating a table in Word. If you’re not sure what I mean, please ask.

The title of the each column should be “Sample to be Tested”, “Rationale for testing”, “Preliminary tests”, and “Special handling/storage”. The rows should be each item. There are 12 items total. Please focus on those in the highlighted section at the bottom of the pictures, but not all items need to be taken/tested. Think about the most important ones. Some of the items appear in more than one picture, too. So take that into consideration when choosing your items. To clarify, you need to describe 12 items. There are many more items than that that can be taken, but please only choose the most relevant 12. Also, this is a forensic toxicology course and not biology. Please do NOT list anything you would take and test for DNA. We are wanting to test items for drugs not body fluids. Also, do not assume things are not legal because you can do it legally; alcohol is not legal for everyone to have.

If you do not list 12 items, several points are taken off for each item!!!!

It is okay to have the same rationale for multiple items. It is also okay to have the same preliminary tests for multiple items. You cannot say “color tests” you need to be specific with that like “cobalt thiocyanate – to test for the presence of ____” Etc. List each one separately.
