Uber has taken the (road) world by storm and have surged in number, with number of drivers now over 400,000 and counting. It’s definitely a gig economy, and almost 1/3 of the American workforce does some type of gig work. Uber drivers choose when they want to work, how much they want to work, and they log into work by communicating via an app (similar to punching a timeclock). Life was good, until someone realized they should be classified as employees, not independent contractors. The article on page 325 describes that some Uber drivers in certain cities and states have filed lawsuits contending that they are more like employees and therefore should receive employee benefits. While some states have ruled that Uber drivers are employees under some provisions, some have yet to decide.
