Virus infections – causes and treatment

While there is no cure for the common cold, symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter medications such as decongestants, pain relievers, and cough syrups.
Another common viral infection is the flu, which is caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms of the flu include fever, body aches, fatigue, and a cough. The flu can be prevented through vaccination, and antiviral medications, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza), can be used to reduce the severity and duration of symptoms if taken within 48 hours of onset.
