Essay Question: A teacher called Ashley has just found out that there is a child with
ADHD in their new Year 5 class. They’re fairly confident about how to support them as
they’ve taught children with ADHD before. This new child behaves very differently, however. Whereas the previous children they’ve taught always had difficulties following
instructions and staying on task, this child can follow instructions and focus on their
work when they want to, but struggles with motivation. Explain to Ashley why this might
be the case.

Question for the essay: Ashley, a new Year 5 teacher, has just learned that she has a student with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in her class. They’re fairly confident in their ability to support them because they’ve previously worked with children who have ADHD. This new child, on the other hand, behaves in a very different manner. Unlike the previous children they have taught, who have always had difficulty following instructions and staying on task, this child can follow instructions and concentrate on their work when they want to, but has difficulty staying motivated. Ashley should be informed as to why this might be the case.
