You have just graduated from Niagara College having successfully completed all the requirements of the school’s Human Resources program. You are overjoyed that a HR Manager, you are also responsible for administration of the company Occupational Health and Safety Program. The company is located in Welland and has 400 unionized employees. It manufactures generic “no-name” automotive parts for a host of domestic and foreign automobiles. You report to the CEO. One day, the Manager of Operations, Susan, walks into your office and presents you with the following scenario. One of the operations employees, Joe, has refused to work. Joe says that he was asked to work with a new chemical but has recently read that the chemical is very toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Joe has not had any training with respect to the handling of this chemical nor does he have any personal protective equipment such as a respirator to wear when handling this chemical.
